"culottes" were the knee-length trousers worn by the aristocracy and the upper class. The down-trodden masses refused to adopt this style of dress instead opting for full-length trousers. It became a rallying cry for the revolution, much like the "shirtless ones" who supported Peron's rise to power in Argentina.

Xs there's a word for it in Spanish but I can't recall it. I'll take my nausea meds and rent "Evita" this weekend.
