At a discussion on mental health at work today, some of the folks were trying to define the expression 'repression' As in repressed emotion or wants. It got me thinking, and this is the result. How would you all define it (in a poem of course!)

Behind the Veil of Polite Madness

Silent screams of battles fought in a hidden mind,
and even the quiet eyes speak not of what’s within,
and no one really knows the true fury set loose again,
for nothing can make ripples in the exterior they find.

Right rages with wild wrongs in that old song,
and bright are the flashing of the mental swordplay,
as dreams and desires are forged or held at bay,
entwining until its hard to say which is which or wrong.

Caged by conventions and the expectations of others,
the savage heart rails at unions of flux and stasis strange,
longing for the veldt or humbling mountains to range,
to run until the soul is cleansed of things that smother.

Howl in rage behind the silent mask of civilized man,
burning in chains of fire and ice scaring the psyche,
hollowing out the world hidden beyond what they see,
to the rolling drums of a heartbeat only forever can ban.
