I always love the pack hounds. I attended a herding clinic in northern Virginia years ago. Really nice country and they still had the Foxhound packs. One of the hounds was there just hanging out. I'd met a number of trials bred dogs (of various dog sports) and generally they aren't something that makes a good pet. This Foxhound was a nice guy though. Maybe that's just how they are.

Despite the attitude of some people on this board, it really isn't unusual for people to use and breed for multiple purposes but it generally doesn't happen in the breeds with large numbers of registrations. Breeding for and achieving dual purpose dogs was common among German Wirehaired Pointer people, same with Chesapeake Bay Retriever people and all the sight hound people I knew were into lure coursing. It's not hard to run into people who skip from conformation shows in spring and summer to fall hunting. Or conformation shows when the dogs in coat and performance events when the dogs out of coat.

As I said I have herding dogs. They do lots of things well from protection to herding to obedience and agility. If one is diligent as a breeder it is possible to produce dogs who are champions in multiple events.

Border Collies?
I had one a few yrs. ago. Sadly she passed away from IMHA at 3 yrs.
We really loved her. Uncanny intelligence.

We couldn't give her the exercise she needed so opted for a rescue poodle for her replacement.
But if I had the room and stamina, that would be the dog for me.
