Generally if a tackle gets the ball, it's not a foul, even if hard contact is made. In this case the Frenchman got the ball, but the ref called a foul. Ref might have been influenced by a little Portugese drama.

Other fouls include tackling with cleats up, a high-kick/dangerous play, or a tackle without getting the ball (ie. hammering the player)

I was thinking one happened a little different, but I could be wrong on this one.

Here's the BBC Commentary:

87 mins: A second yellow card and Louis Saha will miss what looks like being the biggest match of his career after a horrible two-footed lunge on Luis Figo.

His teammates are probably relieved he won't be on the pitch with them.

Hmm, ‘horrible’ seems a bit over the top as he wasn’t going in with much venom. But as I say two-footed tackles are a good way to end up in the ref’s book.

Anyway, I’m off down the pub.

You are watching on ABC/ESPN right?? Average rating so far for World Cup is 2.5. Low ratings = less commercial breaks.

So it's Germany - Portugal in the third place game. I remember the horrible Euro 2000 match when Portugal played their own B team after they were assured of going through and beat Germany's A team 3-0 on a hat trick by Conceicao (sp?)

In that same Group, England also failed to advance -- and their fans had to make what some paper in England called their "personal Dunkirk" from Belgium - Holland back to England.

We did at least beat the Krauts that year.

Roost, roost. Go ahead and start clucking.
It's Italy all the way. Be happy with your French bet.

In other sports news, a sad weekend for England Cricket as fast bowler Trueman dies at age 75.

Had he still been alive England might well have called him up for the ODI team.

Actually I thought I saw that Italy recorded 14 shots on goal to 5 for France.
As some might suggests, just average.
I'd call that just average domination.

Start ordering your pizzas now. It's going to be an Italian (coalition) victory!

Yeah but having Portugal and Romania advance ahead of you meant that the victory over Germany meant nothing really.

It doesn't matter, though -- that tournament will only be remember for the absolutely worst penalty kicking performance by any team at any level. Dutch missed 5 of 6 PKs -- two during play -- to lose to Italy. Horrible.

Perhaps one reason for the low ratings is the awful US coverage of the World Cup. Univision and BBC coverage outclassed ESPN/ABC by miles.

Obrien is a baseball announcer who got a "special assignment" to cover the WC. That's like putting a golf announcer in the booth for the Super Bowl.

He came in with both boots up, showing the studs - that's one.
Two: he wrapped his legs around the player (Figo) which can lead to some very broken bones.

As they say in the parlance, he earned it. Very foolish and he was disgusted knowing no possible time in the final. He's out.

Me too. I simply cannot stand the French as a nation and as a people. Although as a Brazilian fan; it may be better if France wins, just from "record" point of view since Brazil will be still leading comfortably by having 5 world cups versus Italy 3 and Germany 3, but in this case I will rather have Italy win 4 world cup and get closer to Brazil record than see the French win it.

I hope you are predicting a win for Italy because you are always wrong and that will ensure a France victory.

OK, that explains it. It was two-footed, and Saha came in with his cleats up rather high. Thanks all! I'll learn a few things about soccer yet, just in time to forget it all until 2010. :)

Quite an ending to that game, even if the Portugese player was offside.

I haven't seen those Ronaldinho's commercials. But seems to me he has replaced lump-of-lard Ronaldo as FIFA's poster player.

What's the matter with these bleeding-heart traitors at FIFA? Is socialism truly a mental disorder?

As I predicted for the final: Italy-France 2-0. And I'm sticking to it.
