One of the most incompetent displays of penalty-taking I've seen in years.
Same as ever; England play crap and squeeze through and it ends in heroic failure (oxymoron alert).
England's major problem at all levels of sport is psychological. They are either the ultimate bottle boys or lack the ability to finish someone off when they are down.
I thought that might have been changing with England's victory in the 2003 Rugby World Cup and in the Ashes last year. But even there they can't take things to the next level like the Aussies would and go for world domination. They reach a peak and then drop off very, very quickly because there isn't enough depth (or depth of character) to sustain pre-eminence.
I don't want to be over critical today of all days but the heroic failure you talk of gets tedious after a while.
If you are a great side, packed with players of steely resolve, you win penalty shoot outs. Yes it's a lottery but it's not all down to bad luck either...
