WCKY, WSAI To Swap Signals In Cincy (Air America station downgraded)

Clear Channel/Cincinnati's WSAI (1360Homer, The Sports Animal) on July 7 will swap dial positions with liberal Talk clustermate WCKY, a move that puts "Homer" on a booming signal audible throughout much of the East Coast after sundown.

"Moving Homer to 1530AM will enable us to broadcast The Sports Animal at 50,000 watts," said CC/Cincinnati Director/AM Operations Darryl Parks. "Increasing the station's reach gives us the opportunity to better serve the huge demand for Sports radio in the region."

Air America/liberal talk was all excited to wind up on a big huge station in Cincinatti with a signal that reached much of the East at night. But now they're being exiled to a weaker signal, much weaker; Clear Channel figured out sports would do better than libtalk. See, liberals, radio stations are supposed to make MONEY...

Air America should switch with WKRP (a cancelled '70s show).

"Young man, this radio station is a business. It is not here for your personal listening pleasure."--Mrs. Carlson,
owner of WKRP (her son Arthur is the GM), first episode.
Clear Channel realizes radio IS a business and they switched Air America to a weaker signal, replacing it with something people will actually want to listen to...

The only reason CC had AA in the first place is to keep the Feds off of their backs. They really gave AA a chance. I don't see how they can afford to run.

Exactly--keep the feds from bringing back the (Un)Fairness doctrine...

This thread on a radio discussion board has an interesting post:

http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,41332.msg278348.html#msg278348

on it, "fredflintstone" says:
"The article points out WCKY has shown declining numbers since it launched a year and a half ago and "The Homer" has shown consistent growth...Apparently, Parks has not figured out that Jerry is a big part of the problem - the problem with numbers and the problem with shrillness...Sports talk also avoids the challenge facing ALL political talk radio - major advertisers who do not want to seem associated with controversy and who will not buy political talk radio.
...If a progressive talk station is not performing well, CC execs (like radio suits everywhere) will look elsewhere to place blame: Progressive talk is not right for the market. The format has peaked. AAR's product is shrill."

I might add that when a show gets great numbers, advertisers may overlook the "controversy" factor. (See Stern, Howard--for a diff. type of "controversy", among others)

Come to think of it, "Venus Flytrap" would be a great screen name.
