Oh - I remember now- wasn't he terribly disfigured and the mother thought the girlfriend would leave him, but she insisted on taking care of him and said his wounds would be proof of his bravery?

One of the most touching moments in the book.

I agree, and it was a real surprise. I thought she'd dump him; she very insistently didn't. And that's when she and Molly really bonded -- which is why all the predictions of a Molly/Fluer dust-up at the wedding are wide of the mark.
