Again, the refs blow a call and it changes the entire game

Bad call, but the Italian player sold it well. Not unlike a questionable pass interference call in the NFL that goes to the receiver..

If it were any other country than Australia or the US, where soccer isn't an obsession, there would be massive riots going on right now over that call.

The Aussies should never have let him get that close. They should have played for extra time in the last minute or two.

The Aussies have to be absolutely heartbroken. It was their game to lose at that point.

An awful ending to that match. Bad taste in mouth right now.

Right. They had the advantage in extra time. To lose in stoppage time a man up is really sickening.

Agreed.

Cruel cruel fate, to get a questionable penalty against you at the end of injury time.

Very italian though.

When that penalty was called I was remembering a situation that occurred in a Paulista league game in Brazil a few years ago. The referee called a penalty right at the end of stoppage time. The kick taker took forever to line the ball up and walk away from the ball. The referee blew the final whistle before he had the chance to take the kick.

That penalty was called right at the end of stoppage time and Totti took it almost two minutes after stoppage time had expired. The referee would have had every right to blow the final whistle and should have in my opinion.

Totti sold it, the ref bought it lock stock and barrel.
