Phil Hendrie was great when he first came to Los Angeles.. His ego became massive, however. At the same time , he became less and less funny. He had to clue the audience in that HE was doing the voices. HE was the genius. HE was the huge talent. He got fewer and fewer susceptible callers and just talked to himself -- not as funny.

I think he tried to become hip with his son's generation and became more raunchy, belching over the air time and again, crude jokes, etc.

I think he just got tired of his old gig and his rabid audience (me included) grew tired of it.

I listened to Ted of Beverly Hills last night and didn't find any humor. He's been mailing it in.

There have been times, however, in his earlier shows that I laughed til I cried.

End of an era.
Only because of the accident of a job in Los Angeles did I ever get exposed
to Hendrie and all his alter-egos.

Yeah, I care. And so does my much smarter engineering cousin in Dallas.

I'm just suprised that Hendrie didn't get violence visited on him by
some disgruntled caller angry over being duped on air.

I'm gonna' miss Ted Bell. The time he gave the haute cuisine quiz
to some poor innocent young Southern lady still has me laughing.
And T.C. Collins and the over-the-top preachers.

I'll miss his show, also.
All of the proceeds (not just some of the proceeds) goes to a charity for homeless children. He's a remarkable ventriloquist.

I think that's my biggest gripe with his "schtick" and methods: I listen, I invest my time in trying to hear REAL NEWS and information I can't get on the ABBCNNBCBS and the REAL VIEWS of the liebrals who populate (too much) of our politics. I really don't want to waste time listening somebody pretending to play both sides of the conversation with me.

I understand, since I recall you were strapped into a chair with headphones stapled to your skull, forced to listen to his show instead of what you really wanted to hear. ;^)

I think his time in radio comedy was up. He had a nice run, i just hope he doesn't have to crawl back. That would be embarrassing! He said he'd come back only if he could say the f-word.

I don't think he'll be back.

For the forum, here's background on Hendrie
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Hendrie
(yeah, it's Wikipedia, but a fair summary)

And I'm gonna miss his imitations of Art Bell and Tom Leykis.

Yes, sometimes it sounded like there was a fine line b/n comedy and taking advantage of people.

Although occaisionally he let a caller, usually a woman, know that it was a put on.

Or do you think it was callers like I might be who play along with him. I mean who in their right mind would think that an interview with a convicted pedophile wanting to get a job in a day care could be serious... He was funny for an hour a so ever so often, but it sometimes coud get boring.

Even God himself has his detractors.

No, i'm not comparing Hendrie with God.

I worship Phil! I have listened every night for 6 years and was devastated when he said his show would be going off. In addition to his amazing comedy, his pro Iraq war rants and his put downs of Kerry and other defeatists were a pleasure to listen to. I hope he finds success in the future.

The belching, etc. was a bit over the line. I geuss it signaled the end was near.

I heard Phil while in Sacramento several times, he is a talented man but his attacks on the Catholic Church got old. He obviously worshipped at the altar of abortion, that makes him a loser.

Was he brave enough to redundantly put homosexuals and abortionists in the worst of graphic light? I say, no way.

Yes, at times I'd get a little nervous listening to some of his bits.
BUT...in his madness, he was also a genius.
E.g., when he'd let the whiny little R.C. Collins call in from
military academy (the away-from-home schools for junior/high schoolers)
and let him give his boasting about eventually being a killer in the US Military.
When Hendrie got a real counter-caller from the US Military, Hendrie
would give them plenty of time to set R.C. straight about what it's
really like in the military.
The military callers were so reasoned and measured, I'm sure some
listeners said "I hope the US Military could mold my mess of a child
into something as good as that some day."
