This theory just hit me: What if Nifong is actually applying pressure on all those around the accuser, in an effort to get her to back away so he can drop the case?
If Crystial bugs out, wouldn't Nifong be obliged to investigate false accusation charges? Plus all the other exposure she has on drugs, etc?
You just know the defense lawyers have private investigators scouring the Durham area. They are probably uncovering a lot of dirt, a lot of dropped charges, a lot of ignored charges.
Is he just arresting everybody she ever knew?

Either
1. get her to drop the case
or
2. make her testify
What option gives him the most to lose? I am not quite sure yet. So maybe at this point the pressure is to keep them all under his control.
I doubt it. I think mangum would be happy to drop the case if she could withstand Nifong's duress. Look at the statements she made to UNC medical the next day. I think she and her driver and/or boyfriend attempted to queer the case the next day and thereafter in order to render it unprosecutable. The claim of being raped served its purpose - kept Mangum out of jail and the loony bin - so the next move was to stamp it out and not have it go any further.
They forgot about the election.
