White Sox's Guillen uses homosexual slur

Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen recently used a homosexual slur to describe a Chicago Sun-Times columnist.

The newspaper published a column Wednesday, and it ripped the outspoken skipper for his angry outburst directed at Jay Mariotti, who was covering Game 6 of the NBA Finals and obviously was not around to hear the comments prior to the White Sox's blowout victory over the Cardinals on Tuesday night.

"What a piece of (expletive) he is, (expletive) fag,'' Guillen said.

Guillen was given a chance to explain himself after the game.

"I don't have anything against those people. In my country, you call someone something like that and it is not the same as it is in this country,'' he said.

According to the Sun-Times Guillen explained that in his native Venezuela, the word in question is not used to describe a person's sexuality, rather his courage.

Guillen apparently said Mariotti "is not man enough to meet me and (talk about things before writing.)"

As you might expect, the White Sox were quick to apologize for the remark, which the defensive Guillen used in response to a Mariotti column about how the club dealt with rookie pitcher Sean Tracey after he recently refused to throw at the Rangers' Hank Blalock.

The White Sox claim — again according to the Sun-Times — they are "working with" Guillen on how he speaks publicly.

If he's ordering his pitchers to throw at players, he ought to be suspended, at minimum. What a bush-league hot dog!

He didn't and he won't, any more than Larussa will.

Everyone just likes to bash the White Sox and Ozzie. Jay Mariotti is a piece of trash. I would have called him worse. The only reason Ozzie is getting attacked is because we're on the South Side. If Kerry Wood said this about Mariotti it would be a non issue. Remember Kerry Wood bashed Sammy Sosa's radio, no one called him a racist, hatemonger...

  1. Jay Mariotti IS a "f___king fag".
He's also a c-o-w-a-r-d, and that was Ozzie's whole point.

  2. As to Ozzie's 'berating' of rookie Sean Tracey - puleaze.
Tracey forgot a cardinal rule of baseball -- the MANAGER is the boss. If he tells you to hit a batter, you hit the batter. If he tells you to run laps, you run laps. If he tells you to scrub the shower floor, you scrub the GD floor!

  3. Now why DID Oz ORDER to the kid to whack the guy in Texas? Easy, another baseball cardinal rule; you PROTECT your teammates. And yes, its called retaliation. A.J. Pierzynski got whacked twice - real good too. One on the elbow which could have ended his season.

  4. And in case anyone missed the Tuesday smack-down the Sox put on St Louis (20-6), well it happened again.

In the 6th inning when the pasting continued - 1st Brian Anderson got hit square in the back (of all people sheesh), then immediately following that Ozuna got hit! Guess what Ozzie did in the 7th :-), yep he put in Riske who hit the 3rd Card batter.

    That was payback.

It's also baseball.

I wonder if they'll come after him the way they came after Rocker.....

He's a minority. It will all be forgotten in two days.

There are—or, at least, used to be—circumstances where throwing at a player is justified, even expected. Not a fastball at his head, mind you, but something slower and lower.

It's only lately, in the era of prima donna players (e.g. Manny Ramirez gets irate about a harmless brush-back pitch!) and feminized, PC, or just plain ignorant players and fans, that anyone would even think of calling it "bush-league."

Funny, I used to dislike him also, but he seems much better these days. For some reason.

If Kerry Wood said this about Mariotti. . .

I don't think it's likely that a Cub, who plays right by what's known as "Boystown," would make such a PC error.

Please. Let's keep in mind that this is FR so it's "loose the ship."

Please confirm you have used the word it's correctly. Could it be its, or its'?

Of course its used correctly because it denotes possession. That's just between you and I, however.

Now that the two Sox teams are out of the running I am still looking forward to the centenary festivities of 100 years of Cubs baseball without a World Series title.

"In my country, you call someone something like that and it is not the same as it is in this country"

Funny. I thought THIS IS his country, now. Does this illustrate what I often contend about immigrants? They like the jobs they get here. But they are reluctant to assimilate and identify with this country due to the moral decline of the popular culture that labels weirdos/fags as "normal".
