Brides Hired By The Month Updated: 13:46, Monday June 19, 2006 Husbands in India are cashing in on a lack of single women - by renting out their wives. Men unwilling to find a bride of their own pay a monthly fee to hire someone else's. One farm worker in Gujarat state leases his Mrs to a wealthy landowner for 8,000 rupees (£71) a month, the Times of India reported. He could expect to earn a monthly minimum wage of around 1,050 rupees (£12). The wife is expected to live with the landowner, look after him and his house, and have sex with him, the report said. Several others also rent out their wives on a monthly basis in the western state. The male-female ratio is becoming increasing skewed across India because many parents abort female foetuses, preferring sons to daughters. This is because female children must be married off, and the daughter's parents usually have to pay the groom's family a dowry of cash and gifts - often a massive burden on resources. Dowries were outlawed in 1961, but the practice is still common and the law ill-enforced. The lack of marriageable girls in Gujurat has also led to booming business for bride brokers, who are paid to find a woman for a man to marry. Brokers charge a groom's family up to 70,000 rupees (£827), and the girl's family will receive around 20,000 rupees (£236).
To me the significant line of the story is:

Thus using abortion to skew the natural population ratio, the same think is being done in China. I can just hear the Planned Parenthood folks indorsing it because "At least it may end up as a way for them to control their population growth."

People are aborting girls in India because they don't want to pay a dowry... but they are willing to spend 70,000 rupees to a broker to help find a bride for their sons?
A massive war between India and China to bleed off those hundreds of millions of unmarriageable men would control population growth, that's for sure.
This is going on in a primitive latrine of a country where most of the citizens would be mystified by all the personal hygiene products we have all around us.
I'm thinking this might make it as a FOX reality show.
Or Americans could adopt Indian girls and raise them as their own. They wouldn't have trouble finding a husband when they grew up, because Indian chicks are hawt.
