The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I'd try the Apple Cider Vinger, the Sunflower seeds, and or veg. oil.

Interesting the veg. oil is an anitinflammatory....except that it takes so long for the benefits to be visible. Would have to be used more for a preventitive, then a cure.

Very interesting...

The stated protein amount in the sunflower seeds is high... you wouldn't want to feed it to a founder risk, any of that stuff, probably. But for a hard workin' horse like Harley... it's worth a try :~)

Well, I wouldn't want to give him more the a cup a day, maybe not even that much and only maybe when we are in the conditoning mode. I really don't worry that much about coat condition over and above what he has naturally. I think he stays pretty shiny and slick just on his own. I believe it's due to being wormed so regularly...I think that's the best thing you can do.

Do you think it helped?

Agreed. It'd be a curiosity, more than anything else, if any of them made a noticeable difference.

On the apple cider vinegar and electrolytes... One thing that I've always found to be really 'refreshing' when I've been hung over (shudder) is pickles... and even more... pickle ~juice~ which is largely vinegar, right? For some reason, pickle juice always tasted soooooo goood. just a sip at a time.

The oil helped a lot on Bay's skin and hoof. I think it was the shoer who told me to do that. He doesn't think topical hoof products do anything, that you have to feed oil into them to get it into the foot.

Speaking of shoers, ours stood us up last week. No call. I've called him twice... no call back yet. I really don't want to lose my shoer.

On the corn oil... I haven't needed it since on Bay... I think because I switched to Senior feed, which has more fat and oil, and the joint supplement, that has skin and hoof stuff in it too.

EEEWWWWWWWWWWWW......:) Never tried that one, not caring for pickles that much:)

I believe it was Blade that talked about ACV...put it in the water to stop algee, but did we talk about it as an electrolyte supplement??? That was the main one I'd like to find out. I'd be more inclined to give that...paste/powder electrolytes worry me, and according to my feed store guy, the mix I use to feed is not that great...

I may google and see if I can find some more out about that.

It's not good any other time, but I'm tellin' ya, if you're hung over and your body is screaming for electrolytes, pickle juice is about the most satisfying thing out there... and that's before I even knew about electrolytes. :~)

Hey, not meaning to change the subject or anything, but did Rosie get rid of her dog? I was lurking over on HH and came across a comment between the two of you about it.

Oh - The dog was being fostered down the road through Malamute rescue people, and had escaped the foster home. She saw the 'found' ad at the store and came to get him.... so he's back in the hands he belongs in... oh - and he's a she. But I just can't get used to that. We didn't get down and look under all the hair, but I sat and watched it lift it's leg to pee on things!

I've seen female dogs hike their leg, but they usually kinda squat too. I think it's some kind of Alpha-female thing. So she's still got the black and white dog that was Homer's buddy? Wasn't his name Cisco or something like that?

She still has Cisco, her dog.... BTW. Not sure which dog you mean on second glance. We're talking about the Malamute that wandered up that I made her take for safe keeping. Posts here: 2,309, and 2,328 :~)

Actually it was 2560 & 2561 that caught my eye. That's what happens when you drop in on the middle of a conversation I guess.

Actually it was not met hat initiated the ACV discussion, but I used it during the summer and it did help the algae problem. I give it to my dogs to, supposed to help repel mosquitoes, and fleas and flies so thought it would not hurt. My fly problem was not as bad this year, don't know if it was the ACV or not.

We saw deer today a buck and a doe ... and it was pretty neat! We heard them moving through the woods behind the back forty... we were trying to figure out what it was moving back there, was making quite a racket! We saw two then, who made a run for it down the side of my pasture and across the road... I worried for them but they made it! Whew!

The others got spooked I think, by the neighbor dog or us burning in the pasture... and while we heard them still moving around in the woods, they didn't ever follow the others. I hope they had a plan re: "if we get seperated....."

Good Morning.

A little chilly this morning. There was quite a thunderstorm last night. As soon as it started to rain, my cable went out again. The TV stays on, but I lose connect on the PC. The cable man replaced the modem yesterday, but he thinks the problem lies in the lines somewhere. The service people always try and talk me into getting a digital phone. They offer a package with Internet, TV and phone. I would save about 20 a month, but with the luck I have, the phone would go out as much as the Internet. The man who was here, even said the phone lines were not good here. I still have an old rotary phone hanging in my kitchen. At least, if the power goes out, I still have that phone. With me gaming so much, this losing connection is getting old.

Good morning :~)

We're going for a trail ride today! One more before we have to pull all the saddles in for winter.

I'm with you, so far, on the cable phone... While our cable doesn't go out very often, it's useful to have options in outages.
