....Let me also say a word about the players. These students have lived through an extraordinarily painful situation for the last eight weeks. Whether or not the felony charges are upheld against the three indicted students, the fact is that members of the team engaged in irresponsible and dishonorable behavior on the evening of March 13, and those who were involved bear responsibility for their actions. For all that, few of us have suffered an ordeal like the one that unfolded as intense media interest turned this event into a worldwide news story. Setting aside the legal charges, which must be resolved in court, I am pleased that team members have acknowledged the error of their conduct and have made the commitment to create a new history for themselves and their sport at Duke.
We will take care to assure ourselves that these changes of heart and conduct do in fact happen -- but its important that we believe in their possibility. None of us is free from the liability to err: thats why we need education. To make a mistake, to recognize it as such, and to take responsibility for making a change might be said to be the essence of education. That is the opportunity now available to our team.
We have work to do outside our walls as well. In the face of media accounts that tended to portray the university and the city of Durham, or Duke and North Carolina Central University, as antagonists, Ive been grateful for all the Durham leaders who have recognized that truth and justice are common values, things we must pursue and uphold together. I said early on that this university will be judged not by the events that happened here but by how we face them and learn from them.

Hey, who is he to judge the sexual morality of others? What kind of closed-minded bigot is he?
Could someone ping the list?
You are absolutely right. In all honesty the players overall acted more honorably after they were implicated until the news media started convicting the whole team. Then they did the smart thing and started to protect themselves. Brodhead and his minions hung the whole team out to dry. And have left them blowing in the wind ever since. I hope the Duke alumni can bring enough pressure to bear to send that piece of PC pond scum packing.
Nifong made them all suspects when he took their DNA. They had no choice but to "lawyer up" which he called "not cooperating." They HELPED the police in anyway they could even identifying who and who wasn't at the party. Duke didn't inform the parents and these guys, or at least Evans, talked without the aide of counsel. Brodhead is out of Yale, pulled a similar stunt there, and needs to go.
Brodhead is a fathead.
I have better words for him but they are prohibited.
"Please: NO profanity, NO personal attacks, NO racism or violence in posts."
My words would violate all those rules and then some.
Academic and leftist do it for me. Those are the two most dispicable words in the English language. No, never mind, I just thought of two more..Hillary and Nifong.
Exactly, Brodhead has not yet figure out he is about to lose his job, I guess.
The sad part is he will probably very easily land at another institution of higher mind-numbing to continue his ways.
Another great quote from the letter..."As I have said, its essential that we allow the criminal justice system to run its course, and that we wait for the truth to be established before we reach final judgment. In the meanwhile, we need to remember that the American legal system is based on the principle of the presumption of innocence. When he handed down his third indictment on May 15, District Attorney Nifong stated that no other students were under investigation; with the cloud of suspicion lifted from other members of the team, the legal case has taken on finite boundaries. Now we must wait for the legal process to do its work."
He is apparently a complete idiot. As of June 5 he still combines "presumption of innocence" and "nifong" in the same sentence.
what are the options for residents of Durham? Nifong apparently won the D primary, with no R's running, so he just stays in office? Is there a procedure to remove him? Can people write-in in the general election? He really has to go ... he's single-handedly offered those boys' families the right to sue Durham and end up basically owning the town/county by the time this is over.
There is apparently a strong write-in campaign for Cheek. Nifong's campaign manager (another thread) dumped him and went to work for Cheek's campaign. I think it's a strong possibility that they can get rid of Nifong. Any republicans they have in Durham can vote in the election when they didn't vote in the primary and other dems may be more interested now than they were May 3.
Greta: Guest host (blond babe) goes for the throat. Makes the point that not only did he make damaging public statements about the suspects, he knew the statements to be at odds with the evidence. Asks panel whether Nifong could be brought up on charges.
After some hemming and hawing, Ted Williams says (my paraphrasing) "If what the defense is putting in their court filings is true, Nifong could be in trouble".
I just hope that once Nifong is gone then Brodhead follows.
Thanks. I didn't knwo that an opponent had emerged after the primary. TV coverage has only referred to the D primary and there being no R running. I hope he gets crushed in November.

The campaign manager story was just today. The possible unafiliated or write in candidate [the two catergories take different amounts of signatures] just this week announced he was considering the run. He is a current member of I believe the Durham County commision but it could be Durham city council too.
Shall I assume Cheek is another D? Still would be an improvement on NIfong.
