If You Could Live Anywhere

Freepers I need your help. We're very seriously thinking of moving out of Southern California. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1636409/posts

We've read the books "50 Fabulous Places to Raise Your Family" and the comprehensive "Cities Ranked and Rated". We've used the websites www.bestplaces.net and www.findyourspot.com. We've received the travel guides from over 40 states we're thinking of travelling or moving to. But I think the people of FreeRepulic might be the best resource of all for recommending places to raise a homeschooling family in the US. Many of the people here travel quite a bit and have noticed trends that affect families.

So if you could move your family to any affordable city (median home prices < $400,000) in the US where would it be?

Thanks so much!

You wouldn't believe how many retired Americans have already beat you to it from Ensenada to Rosarito. Often to find out the hard way about Mexican property rights and the law. Can't beat the cost of living though. One of the local papers had a column each week just for Americans visiting/living in Baja. Personally I wouldn't take the chance.

I was just kidding, of course. Yeah, a lot of Americans got screwed with Mexican leases in Baja. I heard of a few old guys who married Mexican women so that they could own the property rather than lease it. Things are better now, but I don't know how much better.

Getting back on topic, A friend of ours moved to the Charlotte, NC area last year. So far, she loves it. It's one of the areas we're considering.

I lived in Charleston, SC for about 6 years till I was about 14. We lived on an island with big open back yards between houses. And I remember some of the southern hospitality. That it sorely missing here in So CA. My wife yearns for friendlier neighborhoods too. Can that still be found?

When we first moved here we would drive along a street and people would wave to us. We wondered if they thought we were somebody they knew! It took us a while to realize that people are just friendly and wave to everybody!!!

They really are salt of the earth people, who will help you and support you and tell you if your kid is screwing up when out of your sight. Ma'am and sir are common (another thing it took me time to get used to.... made me feel old) Sorta like things used to be.

I still have a habit of waving to people in our neighborhood, even if I'm not sure who they are. Must be a habit I picked up years ago in Charleston. People around here don't usually do that and I often just get stares.
