I understand that the side that loses a War should forgo the symbols of their defeated regime and have some allegiance to the victor.Yes... allegiance to the victor, just like:
- the students at Tiananmen Square
- the Poles, Czechs and the rest of Eastern Europe
- the Kurds in northern Iraq
- any non-muslim in the Middle East
