Join the Army or Marines and you'll see black helicopters all the time...

I saw black helicoptors today.

You've seen black helicopters?

I've seen them, too. I've walked around them, talked to their sentries and even been hassled by their unit CO.

Even though this story is a little off-topic, I believe it's relevent in light of your comment.

I fly radio control airplanes on a helo LZ at a local military base. We usually fly every weekend. Occasionally, the military will do some exercises which includes the use of their LZ (our flying field).

One morning, while driving up to the LZ, we noticed about half a dozen black Hughes 500-type choppers lined up on the LZ. There was a guy with a short, military-type haircut sitting in a Toyota Previa minivan. A large Rider bobtail was parked nearby. While speaking with him, he got out to talk to us and I noticed he was wearing military-style jump boots. Even though this is a military base, this struck me as unusual. Most of the time, the military guys I know don't mix their jump boots with civilian cloths. As the conversation progressed, I learned he was in the Army and his unit was in town on a training mission and that he was the sentry guarding the choppers.

I've never seen a sentry in civilian clothes sitting in an unmarked civilian vehicle. Usually, they're in uniform and in marked vehicles. As we walked around the choppers, we saw that they were black, not dark green. And there was no markings on them at all. No US Army, no serial numbers, no unit flashes, nothing.

A short time later, a coupld of unmarked white Ford full-size vans came driving up the road toward the LZ. I knew all the folks who belonged to our club and what kind of cars they drove, but didn't recognize these. They parked, and everyone who piled out were also dressed in civilian garb. One sawed-off little dude was obviously in charge because he was yelling and screaming about how these 'dumb civilians' were all over 'his' LZ.

Meanwhile, someone opened the back of the Rider truck and in it I could see all the unit's flight gear was inside, hanging from the walls and stacked on the floor.

The unit's XO came up and talked to me, asking if we could clear off. I told him it would be no problem.

I found out later from the club's President, that these guys were Delta Force and were there for a training exercise.

So, where and under what circumstances did you see your black helicopters?
