DURHAM -- Duke All-American basketball player J.J. Redick was arrested Monday night on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Officers had a license checkpoint station set up in Durham Monday night at South LaSalle Street and Kangaroo Drive, near Duke Manor.
Shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday, officers said a 2005 Toyota SUV approached the checkpoint and then the driver made an illegal U-turn away from the checkpoint.
A police officer followed the Toyota, which then turned into the parking lot of the Belmont Apartments on McQueen Drive.
The driver that got out of the vehicle was J.J. Redick. Redick blew a .11 BAC after he parked his vehicle, and officers then charged him with a DUI and unsafe movement of a vehicle for the illegal U-turn.
There were several passengers in Redick's car, but their names are not known at this time.
Redick has been released on a $1,000 cash bond.

If I'm not mistaken he's finished up his eligibility and probably even graduated. I don't know when he got the SUV but at this point none of the "no gifts" rules apply to him anymore.

You think a lacrosse player who got cheating would have been allowed to stay in school (Greg Newton)?
I knew non-athletes who were caught cheating and allowed to stay. At a different time, I took exactly the same computer science course with the same professor in which Newton was of accused cheating. Cheating or not, most basketball players couldn't pass that course. Besides, Newton was not an asset to the team and his disputes with K were well known. I doubt very much that K would do much to save him.
You think a lacrosse player who was thrown off his high school team for sexual assualt would have been admitted (Sheldon Williams)?
Like the current Duke lax charges, those charges were later proven false.
You think drug charges would have swept under the rug for a lacrosse player (JJ)?
I knew non-athletes who were caught with drugs and allowed to stay.
You think a lacrosse player with a 2.3 GPA and an ACT of 15 would have been let into school (Sean Dockery)?
Every team at Duke and every Divion I team in the country has its academic underperformers who would not otherwise be admitted.
You think a lacrosse player could have got credit for a summer session he never attented (Carlos Boozer),
Never heard about that. Prove it.
or that the mother of a lacrosse player would get a job she was never qualified for (Duhon) and that same players little brother would get a scholarship to an elite prep school that Coach K's wife was on the board of?
You're complaining that the Duhon family used their connections to get their kid in a good school? Being on national TV with the Cameron Crazies does have an upside.

As opposed to canceling the rest of the season?
To: Locomotive Breath
No, I am saying he faked the back problem to avoid it.

(Excuse me. But are those your legs or are you riding a chicken?)
To: FearlessFreep
Right. And then he subsequently had both hips replaced as a cover story.

Yes, he's probably signed with an agent and been fronted money against his signing bonus. No laws or rules broken here.
BTW I used to prosecute OMVI and a .11 is not snockered or hammered. Years ago .15 was the legal limit, which was reduced to .10 and now .08 by the MADD mothers. On a guy Redick's size its probably 3 or 4 beers.

Are you saying SUVs are wealthy enough to afford their own Honda? :>

Is Reddick white, or black?
Is "Duke Manor, whatever that is," inhabited by mainly Duke students?
To: Jezebelle
I realized as soon as I posted that someone was going to make that observation--It was only a matter of time.
Cheer!

It's a student ghetto located just north of campus. Or at least it was.
To: FearlessFreep
Er...please tell me you're not serious.
To: Locomotive Breath
Ha. No.
However, I do feel that he knew how bad a season he was going to have and it played a part in his decision to sit out. If had been coaching this past seasons team, he would have toughed it out.

Or at least it was a student ghetto. There were a number of apartments just beyond that were pretty sketchy and not occupied by students. It's possible the rot has migrated south into Duke Manor.
I remember being caught by police as part of a group of graduate students skinny dipping in the Duke Manor pool. I was not a resident of Duke Manor at the time by many of the group were and we nonresidents were "guests". The cop told us to put our clothes home and go home. He got a real good eyefull of some pretty girls so I guess that made his night and he was in a good mood. Good thing Mike Nifong wasn't DA. He'd have prosecuted us all for sex crimes.
To: FearlessFreep
Actually his wife Mickie is on the public record as threatening to leave him if he didn't take care of himself and address the issue.
To: Locomotive Breath
So he has an alibi. I don't buy it and never will.

You would if you saw him, as I did, gimping around campus long before the season started. You've heard of "Bush Derangement Syndrome"? You've got "Duke Derangement Syndrome".
To: Jezebelle
See #14, there is a picture posted. Duke Manor is inhabited by mainly Duke students.
To: Locomotive Breath
Thanks for the diagnoses Doc. And you soulnd like you have ABC Syndrome.

Man, I learned a long time ago to make use of DDs. More than 2 beers and somebody else has the keys.
