Roethlisberger(Steelers' Quarterback) Hurt in Motorcycle Crash(No helmet)

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, broke his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash Monday in which he was not wearing a helmet.

Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition Monday afternoon, Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma at Mercy Hospital said before surgery.

The player's agent, Leigh Steinberg, described the injuries to The Associated Press and said he did not know if there was further damage.

"He was talking to me before he left for the operating room," Jones said. "He's coherent. He's making sense. He knows what happened. He knows where he is. From that standpoint, he's very stable."

Steelers president Art Rooney said the team was "encouraged by the early reports from the medical team" at the hospital. "I am sure Ben knows that we are praying for his complete recovery."

The 24-year-old Roethlisberger was without a helmet, police said. He has said he likes to ride without one, a habit that once prompted a lecture from Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher.

Roethlisberger was between radio interviews and on his black 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa - large, racing-style bike - and heading toward an intersection on the edge of downtown. A silver Chrysler New Yorker traveling in the opposite direction took a left turn and collided with the motorcycle, and Roethlisberger was thrown, police said.

The other car was driven by a 62-year-old woman, police said. They didn't immediately release her name and no charges were filed.

If he were a boxer and not a football player with these injuries I would not let him fight again. In football the quarterback takes quite a battering, and this, at the least, does not bode well for his future.

How would you be responsible for making those decisions?

This guy will need all their prayers. He may have injured his body, but the injury he has inflicted on his own mind and the hearts of his teamates is going to be even tougher to overcome.

This is the guy who said he is careful and rode in groups. There was no group with him that has been reported for this accident.

If you are going to say you ride in groups, ride in groups. Me? I would ride in the middle of the pack, as the front and rear are most dangerous.

I feel sorry for Ben, but his famous last words about riding without a helmet....ouch!!!! Pride cometh before a fall, as the Scriptures say.

Godspeed to your recovery man!

If this one was optional I wonder if he'd be helmet free on Sundays in the fall?

He was probably still giddy from meeting da Prez.

From one month ago:

Not even Bill Cowher can separate Ben Roethlisberger from his Harley.

The Steelers' coach had a talk with his star quarterback yesterday morning about "choices and consequences," but, if there was any hope Roethlisberger would quit riding his motorcycle without a helmet, it was dashed by lunchtime. Big Ben won't stop biking.

"It's a choice," Roethlisberger told a news media pack in the Steelers' locker room. "I just get out there and relax, I don't try to take too many risks, I just go out and enjoy myself."

But no brains? What's with that?

"I'm riding a Harley, so I'm not doing too much crazy stuff."

I'm hearing from some ex-Steeler friends that the injuries to his knees are not that serious.

Good. "Serious but stable condition" means a ton of things. If he flipped over someone's windshield, he'll be hurting for a while...

I'm no Steeler fan but I've always liked that picture of Lambert. One of the toughest mo fo's ever to play the game. What's he up to today?
