Germany, the hosts of the 18th FIFA World Cup, kick off the tournament on Friday against Costa Rica in Munich (LIVE on ABC at 11:00AM ET).
This represents a change to a tradition established back in 1974 which saw the defending world champions having the honour of getting the proceedings under way. The other two teams in Group A, Poland and Ecuador, will fight it out later in the evening.
I play soccer, but I'm not very observant :) Really good game though!
From BBC Sport:
83 mins: The home support's clapping in unison is broken by piercing whistles after Bernd Schnieder goes down in the box. It is a blatant dive but there is no yellow card. The Fifa suits in the stands will not be happy after their directive to clamp down on simulation.
Wow!! What an amazing game!!
Excellent way to open the 2006 World Cup. Several amazing goals, great result for the Germans.
Definately. The first and last will be considered 'Goal of the Tournament' candidates, and it's only the first game!
Safe to say that all the adidas hype about the new match ball isn't just hype. That ball swerved from mid-goal all the way to the corner. Great strike but that keeper was astounded by the movement. Might be a good sign for Becks & Stevie G!!!!!!!
Go Polska!!!!!
Cheers.
Why are all of these people flocking toward a giant tire? :)
Thanks for the great pictures!
It was a great game.
I am really waiting for tomorrow's game with England, but the goals tonight managed to make me get carried away :-)
But isn't he French?
"Interesting to see Oliver Kahn watching the replays from the bench and trying to keep his poker face...."
That was hilarious. We may well see more of that. Germany's defence is a bit leaky.
I've got Klose in my fantasy team. So far so good there then...
Yep.....footy's boring all right :)!!!! (Joking of course)
Hey, me too!. I wish I would have made him captain like I was contemplating, I would have got a double score.
I went with Larssen of Sweden instead. Hopefully, he'll get a bunch against T&T.
Poland vs Ecuador in 30 minutes
"Hey, me too!. I wish I would have made him captain like I was contemplating, I would have got a double score."
Yeah, snap. I was seriously considering it. Hopefully Adriano will bag a couple and then I won't feel bad :o)
lol.
Just watching the news now.
Some English fans are on singing:
"There were six German bombers in the air. The RAF shot them down. lalala"
Don't mention the war :-)
Congratulations, really nice game with some beautiful goals. Now it is our turn to score something :)
