Germany, the hosts of the 18th FIFA World Cup, kick off the tournament on Friday against Costa Rica in Munich (LIVE on ABC at 11:00AM ET).
This represents a change to a tradition established back in 1974 which saw the defending world champions having the honour of getting the proceedings under way. The other two teams in Group A, Poland and Ecuador, will fight it out later in the evening.
3-2
Wanchope
We've got a game on our hands!
Looked like offside though, but the linesman missed it.
5 goals (so far) in an opening game of the World Cup.
Not bad.
The German keeper must really suck, he's given up two goals on only three shots.
Not really, since both goals were basically one on one situations.
Probably right, I was thinking like Hockey, a .33 save percentage won't get you very far in the NHL. :)
And Wanchope is a heckuva player.
Lehmann had a fantastic season for Arsenal but his defense is doing nothing for him today.
Interesting to see Oliver Kahn watching the replays from the bench and trying to keep his poker face....
I think Lehman hesitated a bit on the first goal, and got stuck in no mans land. He could have approached Wanchope to narrow the angle.
Not a great blunder though, but he could have done better on that one IMHO.
And even if CRC doesn't win, getting 2 goals could be huge if it comes down to a tiebreaker to determine who goes to the knock-out round.
As a former keeper, that's something I have noticed more and more in the past few years. It seems as if the philospohy is changing from the goalie making the 1st move (advancing/charging the forward) to one of putting a stake in the ground and waiting for the shot.
I always liked the intimidation factor of going full-on towards somebody...
German press is going to roast them alive tomorrow.
Didn't that Costa Rican pull the German down over by the goal. Isn't that a penalty kick?
They sure need all the help thay can get.
Wow goal by Germany
What a goal
Amazing
I am having a beer :-)
I was supposed to wait until the England game.
Frings converts on the penalty kick, this will be all. 4-2 Germany with 4 minutes left.
Crikey - this may turn into a cricket score.
And who says there is no scoring in soccer?
GOAAAAL!
Germany 4 - Costa Rica 2
As of last weekend, he was tied for 2nd in MLS for assists.
Germany scored more goals than Shaq made free throws last night. :)
Come to think of it, Costa Rica did too.
It looked a bit like a dive to me...
As a former striker, I hated the goalie rushing me :-)
So I agree with you.
