LOS ANGELES — By now, I think I may be the only "expert" commentator who has not given up completely on the prosecution in the Duke rape case.

May or may not be same Anthony Mangum

"...While defendant was incarcerated and unemployed during part of that time period, a year before his release from prison, defendant was employed through the work release program; and after his release from jail, immediately began to work for Alltech, earning $12.00 per hour..."

As much as I hate to admit, Susan makes some good points, something she stumbles over occasionally.

Susan may not actually believe Mangum's story, but positions herself as a supporter so she can say the following with credibility, which offers Nifong a graceful exit and dismissal:

"Let Nifong pick the prosecutor; if his handpicked choice believes there is no case, or no case against one or more of the defendants Nifong has indicted, then so be it. Nifong should have no reason to complain if his own choice disagrees with him."

Nifong clearly bit off more than he can chew in his zeal to get elected. Mangum lied to him, and he foolishly chose to believe her without further investigation. His ego won't allow him to do it, but he should consider Susan's advice. Of course, we all know the defense is shaking in their boots to go up against him - Nifong even said so - so he won't give Susan's idea the time of day.

I doubt it. In her essay, she mentions high-powered attorneys in NC. I don't think she's vying for the tap.

If he's part of Crystal's family, I'm surprised the mother hasn't sold him out. She's the one who contacted Willie Gary.

How would the defense lawyers get a say in making the pro-Mangum (sounds like cro-magnon, doesn't it? LOL!) local news rags publish anything negative about the great and pure Mangum family of Durham?

Do you know how many Mangums live in Durham?

Are all the Mangums in Durham one family?

No, and I think it's a somewhat common name in the region.

Some Mangums are white, some are black.

But it is odd that this particular Mangum drew media attention, in view of the last name of the false accuser. Surely drug dealers and woman-beaters are a dime a dozen in Durham.

So your assumption is that criminals of this nature are not typically reported on in this paper?

I looked in an online directory a month or so ago. It seems to me there were about 125 or so listed, so there's probably at least 300 or so locals with that last name.

oops, sorry, I though y'all were mind-readers.

I was talking about that article in the newspaper about the drug dealer named Mangum. I was trying to figure out why, out of the blue, that article would appear. Of all the drug dealers in Durham, why go after him? And why now? Who is pushing this agenda?

No, that isn't my assumption. I'm not a regular reader so I don't know what their meat-and-potatoes reportage consists of. I just find it somewhat striking that this criminal's last name is Mangum, he flew the coop three months ago, and nothing has happened in that case recently to precipitate reportage of it. The only aspect of the case that stands out as curious is the last name.

I think the defense lawyers can do a lot that ordinary citizens are unable to do. They have the money to hire private investigators and you just know they have hired some very good ones. It would be easy to figure out how to plant a story. $$ is very effective.

It is odd. Whether it's coincidence or not, we won't know until someone looks into it.

i would like to see a shadow defense created whereby they look into such connections and issues like this that don't impact the case directly but give more body to who this woman in, what her full background and relationships consist of, and so forth.

Yes, but it has to be truthful and have some relevance. there's no nexus to the case at all, just to Mangum herself via the last name.

But if this asshole IS Crystal's brother, one wonders if he ever beat or raped her, his own sister. She's what....8-9 years younger than he? Could be.

Yeah, it's not as though he was handling that much weight in cocaine when he was busted. Maybe he left town because he's afraid of the guys higher up the chain, not the court and penalty process. They probably pressured him to give up his masters higher up the food chain, and he's hiding out.

With the timing of this article, maybe she did. LOL
