(CBS) AURORA, Ill. A pair of pit bulls attacked two women Saturday morning in front of an Aurora apartment complex, forcing police to shoot one of the dogs.
Police were called at 3:30 a.m. to an apartment complex in the 900 block of Second Avenue in Aurora for a report that the dogs were attacking the woman, according to a police news release.
An officer found the 44-year-old woman lying on the ground after the dogs had bitten her repeatedly. The officer tried to lure the dogs off the woman, the release said.
At that point, a bystander ran from the apartment building to the street, and the dogs tried to attack him but he defended himself successfully with a stick, the release said.
The police officer then yelled to try to distract the dogs, and one of them ran toward him and forced him to fire one shot. The dog was hit in the head and later euthanized by the Aurora Animal Control and Care Division, the release said. The other dog ran away.
An investigation indicated that the woman had arrived home and was walking toward the building when the dogs attacked her. A second victim, this one a 33-year-old woman, told police the dogs also attacked her in the same place, the release said.
Both victims were taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora. The 44-year-old woman was treated for bites to her right hand and foot and left leg, while the 33-year-old woman was treated for a bite to her left forearm, the release said.
The second dog was not found, and as of late Saturday morning, the owners of the dog were unknown, the release said.
"Dogs of peace", just attacking the people that the other breeds won't...
As Howie Carr says, it should be mandatory that all media reports of Pit Bull misdoings must include the dogs names.
Yes, just a small percentage are terrorists. Time to move on.
And various animal rights groups and vets are against outlawing these pitt bulls...can't figure that one out myself. I am a dog owner and dog lover, and terrified of these pitt bulls for me and my dog!
Everything you need to know about pitbull enthusiasts
Finally it dawned on me that passionate pit bull and "Powerdog" owners are as feminized and emotional about their "pets" as my old poodle-owning great aunties ever were. They even have little kits for dressing-up the poor damn dogs in costumes.
They remind me of the old lady I saw driving a car with a bumper-sticker that read, "Ask me about my granddogs." Their identities are so wrapped up in their "children" -- i.e., their dogs -- that they become irrational about anything regarding them, and lash out viciously at those who challenge their cherished beliefs. If you don't agree with them, you are a communist, a PETA sympathizer, a whiner, a big-government nannyist, etc. It's simply fascinating. Sorry to say it has also reduced my respect considerably for many folks I'd thought were level-headed. I cannot look at anyone who owns a pit bull or Powerdog now without wondering ... are they as nutty and irrational as their counterparts as represented here on FR?
A friend of mine who has a wonderful, well-behaved dog named Tora, has a liberal girlfriend who wanted to know if he had pet insurance for the dog. My friend blinked a few times in surprise and then calmly replied, "No. I love Tora dearly, but she's a dog."
Pets are not "people, too!"
I was at the vet's office this a.m. picking up some meds for my German Shorthair. A guy came walking out of one of the office rooms with two pits on leashes. They didn't act anything but friendly, but I don't trust that breed at all, and I was wary all the time they were around.
Sorry, but my GSP is as protective as any dog I've ever had, yet is as friendly to all as any dog I'd ever want. If it comes to protecting my home, I think I'll rely on my ol' .357.
I'll never forget the elderly woman who walked to her mail box and the neighbors two rotts attack her. She made it back into the house the dogs still attacking her and she called 911 begging for help while the 911 operator played stupid or was stupid about understanding what was going on.
Police were not dispatched until the woman was dead. Anyone who feels the need to own one of these attack breeds, rotts, pit bulls, should have to register them as a deadly weapon and serve time in the pen for any injury their "pet" inflicts.
Here is a clue as to how thick their skulls are, the cop shot the dog in the head, didn't kill it, later it was euthanized. A woman, a child, has zero chance against an attack from an animal like that. I would never own something dangerous that I can't control and has no off button or safety.
Reason #3 why I carry a Kimber 1911A1 .45cal ACP. with Corbon 165gr HPs.
So, what if they have names like Butterfly, Cupcake, Sugar or Moonbeam?
What I want to know is what the hell was this woman doing at 3:30 am to provoke these innocent canines?
Nice weapon.
I carry a H&K USP Tactical 45 ACP with high cap mags loaded with 230gr JRN's.
"I carry a H&K USP Tactical 45 ACP with high cap mags loaded with 230gr JRN's."
Sweet piece, c.
I also carry an extra 8-round mag of Sellier & Belloit 230gr FMJs, just in case.

I hear ya!
My just in case is usually a Glock 21, but, if I have room, it's a Bushmaster M4 with telescopic stock, 40 rd mags loaded with 125 gr military ball.
You have FReepmail.
What I want to know is why these crazed dogs were allowed to roam free at 3:30 AM. "Irresponsible owner" comes to mind. And "dangerous dogs should not be allowed to roam free at any time of day".
You use words like 'crazed' and 'irresponsible' and 'dangerous' but you don't really know that any of those adjectives apply do you? Do you, huh, do you?
You hinted that something at 3:30 AM was "suspect" because of the hour. You asserted that the "canines" were "innocent"--and that the victim "provoked" these carnivores. Funny, "canines" is cop-speak. Simple people like me think these are "dogs". Cop-speak: a human female, a human male vs. ordinary language, a woman, a man.
You could have said that "unrestrained carnivores running wild attacked an innocent human female."
Your description is an attempt to cover up, IMHO.
"Pets are not "people, too!"
You'd have a hard time convincing my "babies" of that...LOL
