Thanks Rus for sharing the cuppa this morning.
one of our FReeper FRiends returns to the "field" in Indonesia soon. I worry about her with the radical muslim terrorists going full hilt there. Protection for God are the prayers for her & her family. We don't post her name etc for her protection. These radicals are crazy idiots but they are SMART crazy idiots who dig up material/locations all over on the Internet.

I can imagine a fourth grader having fun sliding the pegs across the little bars.
I remember those! We had 'em in first grade but they were plastic discs that slide across. I remember then, us kids used to play "Star Trek," Tony always had to be Captain Kirk and Chuckie J. always had to be Spock. I ended up being Dr. McCoy but I did double as Chekov from time to time. That was our "control unit" where the number of discs gave you your speed like if we needed warp 7, well, we slid 7 discs across, The different colors control different things like red was for the phasers, yellow for warp speed, green impulse, blue for photon torpedoes. Those were the days. B-)

They used the abacus at school to try to explain decimal theory to us because we were at the switch over.
I know you're in the UK and during the 60's and 70's, there was this big push for the metric system over there. I know from here in the States, we did have a similar push for the metric system in the early 1970's and when I was in first, second and third grade, we had these things called "centimeter strips" from one centimeter to 10 centimeters and each were a different color, I think 1 cm was white, 2 cm was red, 3 was orange, 4 yellow, etc., IIRC. I remember when Satuday Morning cartoons used to have PSA's educational films (I believe in the UK, they are called PIF's, Public Information Films from what I know of British TV) where you had things like "SchoolHouse Rock" on ABC television explaining simple math, grammar and U.S. history (it was the BiCentennial coming up then too) in animated shorts. NBC had some PSA talking about the metric system in much the same way as "Schoolhouse Rock," and CBS had like a 90 minute snippet of "In The News" where it discussed current events of the week, explain Daylights Saving Time, and so forth. I think by about 1980, the big metric push died out. I know you said a siple sentence but that started a floor of memories being a kid back in the 1970's.
BTW, we host the thread on July 7, 8 and 9th, so I think we need to come up with a theme. I know that weekend, we also have a big airshow here in Pittsburgh as well as July 8th is my birthday, I turn 40. B-P B-)

Hi, Dolly,
Haven't been around much this weekend, and am just getting around to reading the "Dear Abby" questions (some very difficult ones) and your excellent, thoughtful answers. I know where to go next time I have a problem!

I recall the "push" as you call it towards the metric.
I recall my high school science teachers tell us that with in 10 years ALL would be metric. No more inches, pounds etc.
well, they also said computers would never catch on..

Nada.
We both realized communication was going to be difficult, but not impossible. Mainly via snail-mail...

I was watching the Indians on ESPN, but mostly ignoring it now since they're down 7-0. Now I'm answering emails and doing a few last-minute things for tomorrow.

Well, this is the last time I'll see them in a while, so I guess I'll keep it on.
