In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
pleonasm \PLEE-uh-naz-uhm\ noun
1. The use of more words than are necessary to express an idea; as, "I saw it with my own eyes."
2. An instance or example of pleonasm.
3. A superfluous word or expression.
Example sentence:
Such a phrase from President Nixon's era, much favored by politicians, is "at this moment in time." Presumably these five words mean "now." That pleonasm probably does little harm except, perhaps, to the reputation of the speaker.
-- Eoin McKiernan, "Last Word: Special Relationships", Irish America, August 31, 1994
Etymology: Pleonasm is from Greek pleonasmos, from pleon, "greater
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
Amasming!
On and on ran the pleonasm,
Interminable, this verbal spasm,
Droning words in endless supply,
Speaking nonsense, no reason why,
Hillary's having a pleogasm!
At this moment in time, in the dark of the night (or is it the light of the morning?)the spectral ghosts of my ancestoral forefathers who knew the metaphoric and symbolic arts of poesy, and studied deeply into the depths of the way of the kenning, high metaphoric ways to say the same or similar things interestingly, say a pox and a plague be upon all critical complaining of pleonasm spasms!
Wait...help! my vocabulary's being hijacked by John Kerry.....
Now starts the sixth month of congested noses with ear ache...and asthma. What fun be this year...
It is an actual word:
NEOPLASM--noun: an abnormal new mass of tissue that serves no purpose.
Both words refer to Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, et al.
AlGore, reigning ruler of pleonasm
Has such intense enthusiasm
On Warming that's Global
His intentions are noble
So dissent is considered iconoclasm
I am on antibiotics for a spring sinus infection, but this one appears under control. I had to take allergy medication again though. I haven't needed it in years. It is a bad spring in the north east.
They tell me I am not having histamine reactions to pollen, molds or dust mites. I just have chronic sinus. Decongestants and cortisone sprays help. Forget the antihistamines.
Next week I go in for an EGD for the tummy pain flair up I've had. Probably been drinking too much coffee with my asthma flare up. Once I see about that, then maybe i'll complain about the earache again.
Didn't get earaches as a kid. Didn't have asthma as a kid. My body's timing is off....
I am taking Zyrtec, I tried going off of it and wham, I couldn't breathe......I went right back on it. I have all the lousy crap I had all winter. (sigh)
My all-time un-favorite pleonasm is "I thought to myself." Who else are you supposed to think to?
I don't breathe much different when I take it. I do try some allegra D once in awhile, but I know it's the decongestant that is doing the trick.
But I've had the stuffy nose like this since I was a kid...pretty much all year round with a little bit extra when there's extra particulates in the air.
Like the Spanish Inquisition, no one ever expects the WFTD classroom!
You are show today, with Vastie as win and Arghy as place.
Good morning Loney! What's for lunch?
A for you!
And accounted for!
My kiddos are so lucky to have me as their dictator instead of you. ;)
Could be. I think we've been listening to boatloads of it lately.
She would, but who would watch? A for you.
