Goodness. Bent screws?
Yeah. I was thinking they were only 3 weeks old, but they're not - they're the whole 6 weeks old. It was the 2nd cast that was just 3 weeks old.
Doc R added some more screws to the big bone, too. "Bobby"'s been kicking up a storm, dont ya know? I guess at 3, he's still growing a little, too, isn't he? I'm not that knowledgeable about horses, like our other FReepers here are. We do know he's frisky, anyway.
You're very welcome! Good news is always great to share.
Happy 4th of July! A round of ice cream and fireworks for everyone - and some peppermints for His Royal Studliness!
PS - Heh heh, I *hope* that's why they're bent - and not from him gaining weight!
I am so glad he continues to do well. I'm all for happy endings!
Happy Independence Day to all!
Thanks for the update.

The address above has more of an explanation on the bent screws.

The address above gives an update for today...
Update 168: Just passed Michael Matz on the track (Tuesday morning) and he tells me Barbaro is doing well. He had a good night after his busy day yesterday. Everything is looking good. Relieving news!
Updated 7:50am
Sounds like promising news. He's a strong horse.
LOL.....why should I be the only one gaining weight!
Good for him. I am sure his heart was broken that day.
"Think I read too, that Matz had a horse in a race at Belmont recently."
He took Rasta Farion over there, but she keeps getting scratched. I am not sure what the problem is. She was supposed to run last week, but got scratched, then he entered her in a race yesterday, and she scratched. The only race he has won since at least the Belmont was on June 21. I think the quality of his horses isn't the best right now. Here are the races entered as of now;

Perhaps after Barbaro he has an abundance of caution.
Thanks for the update, Rte66. I hope the bent screws don't indicate any problem building up.
Thanks for the update. Good news!
Happy Fourth! And here's information on the question you asked.
"The reason we changed the screws is that he had two broken screws that crossed the pastern joint," he said. Richardson said that the screws he replaced were in "the least important part of the fixation" and that veterinarians knew bent screws in that area would be fairly likely.
"That is an area that we knew was going to be vulnerable to have the implants break, because there's a lot of force and motion that's occurring at the pastern joint, because everything is locked down above it. The end of the plate is there, and it's tending to move, and he's been very, very active on his cast."
Doesn't that sound just a little bit ominous? Cautionary at least. And speaking of cautionary, I'm off to see the ct wizard right now.
A prayer that recovery will quickly lead to happy, healthy pasture life
Barbaro and team had a hard day today. Dr. Richardson said he would have bad days and this was one of them. This is from the Tim Woolley racing site.
Update 172: Thanks for your patience today. Barbaro did show some level of discomfort with his new cast. They decided to replace the cast, change the angle slightly and see if that helps his comfort level. During the change they were able to confirm things happening beneath the cast were fine (there was no obvious reason for the discomfort). Dr Kathy Anderson, who had not seen the most recent radiographs until later this afternoon, said she was "thrilled" with the actual bone-healing process. More updates will likely be forthcoming, but please, keep good thoughts for Barbaro, today was a tough day for all involved.
Oh, no! We don't want Barbaro to *ever* have a bad day of any kind!
Gosh, I hope this doesn't mean he had to go through anesthesia and swimming pool again - but he probably did. Let's pray he's done with that for a while.
I had kinda wondered if they had to redo the left hind "lift shoe" sometimes, like when the cast was changed.
Lemondropkid - do you want to tell them about a very small issue that was in Tim Wooley's blog a few days ago and which we have not addressed here? Meaning something on the left foot that I was pretending not to notice ...
Take care, Barbaro - we're rooting for you!
BUMP the good news and thank you for the ping, R66.
