David, I know it sounds so simple to say it was a evil-hearted woman, but you know what really hit me? I mean, made me so vilely angry? It was the police and the D.A. Even as I watched my very handsome, strong and gentle 6'4" son crucified and brought to his knees by this teen-aged girl's false accusations, she was only doing what she had suffered at her mother's knee. There were enough witnesses and holes in her story to drive an Abrams tank through, but it was the police and the D.A. and a Judge at a Preliminary Hearing who could have put a stop to it. We watched as the D.A. threw his pen up in the air at the Preliminary. We watched as they assigned the case to a D.A. who hadn't won a case in her 5 - 10 year tenure with the office and they let it sit on the back burner for 19 months, then flew our son home from college for a polygraph test. The Polygrapher told Pat to take a plea and go on with his life. These were the people who we elected and paid to protect and serve us. The police never investigated a single exculpatory witness, never even sat down to talk with Pat with an attorney present.

These are the true villains in this story -- I can't fault a crocodile for being what it is -- but I'd sure want to kick the crap out of my toy poodle for doing the same thing.

All you say is true. We grew up thinking that if someone who is innocent is accused, a committed judge, or prosecutor, or investigator would see to it that justice was done. They were supposed to be on the side of justice, not on the side of whoever claimed they were hurt.

But it doesn't work like that, even when the police find out they're off base in investigation. They fear civil suits, so they tend to avoid apologizing for wrongly accusing someone or otherwise dealing with it appropriately. And ego plays a role. DAs tend to think everyone accused is guilty of something, so they all deserve punishment of some kind.
