What's the difference between "orientation" and "preference?"

In another forum there was some discussion of homosexuality and the question was raised whether or not they are born that way. Part way through the discussion, there was a comment that "it's orientation, not preference" and frankly, I didn't get it.

Exactly what is the difference between orientation and preference?

I am oriented towards attractive women. I would prefer if they have large knockers. Get it?

Orientation, preference, you still have a choice whether or not to engage in sinful behavior.

Both terms are irrelevant to homosexuality, which is nothing more than an endless series of individual perverted acts.

IMO,this argument is based on a false premise. It's no more,or less, likely that someone is born with an attraction to members of the same gender than it is that some are born with an attraction to animals,or (in the case of men,at least)underage girls.

Talk about a blast from the past. In the late 70s early 80s, the homos objected to "preference" because it implied that a choice was being made, preferring "orientation" because it was more neutral on the subject.

Sexual orientation is the sexual preference that nature chose for you. Sexual preference is what you choose for yourself.

Preference says you are gay because you want to be; orientation says you're that way becase your genes determine that.

While we're on the subject of "queer" language, does anyone find the word "ghey" as a substitute for "gay/homo" as funny as I do? The word even looks gay. LOL

I fail to see how the desire to wear clothes of the "opposite sex" is anything genetic. We are born naked.

ALL clothes are dictated by fashion and culture.

They're spelled really differently? Is this a trick question?

Excuse me if I offend anybody, but I am reminded that minorities are very particular about what they are called, and the rules change periodically. Consequently one thing that remains the same is that the polite person who is a member of a majority is always being jerked around. This has happened so much that I think that it is the point. "I can make you talk the way I want. I am powerful!"

Sexual orientation [some say sexual identity] is the attraction the person feels towards another - either same sex or hetero sex or both etc.

Sexual preference is the choice.
