They can mix breed like that for Quarter Horse Racing. I am not sure if the Sire or Mare can be a TB, but I have seen plenty of Quarter racing horses with their grandsire or Damsire as at TB. Thoroughbreds have to be plain thoroughbreds. No other breeds in their pedigree.

Yeah, I understand that. I'm just saying that if there will be no way for Barbaro to mate as a TB (to a TB), I was just praying that there could be *some* way to make an exception to the rule of not saving his "seed." It just seems like such a terrible, terrible waste of a great bloodline.

Gretchen Jackson is so hopeful, though, that there will be "little Barbaros" out there racing in the future - maybe I'm worrying for nothing and Barbaro will be able to mate naturally.

Spirited Barbaro revels in visits

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. -- Barbaro, ever the frisky colt, showed high spirits and a strong appetite Friday when four VIPs came calling on the Kentucky Derby winner.

"He's eating up a storm, and obviously he likes the ladies," said University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann, who brought carrots for the patient six days after the horse shattered his right hind leg in the Preakness.
.....
Gutmann, an experienced horsewoman, joined Barbaro co-owner Gretchen Jackson, veterinary school Dean Joan Hendricks and Corinne Sweeney, the hospital's executive director, at Barbaro's stall.

"He actually likes company," Gutmann said. "He's clearly an athlete. That's apparently made a difference. He's strong. But he's also ... friendly."

Jackson fears she won't be able to personally thank the fans who have sent the 3-year-old bay colt more than 1,000 well wishes and gifts, from religious statues to large baskets of apples to homemade greeting cards. ..."
