Our founding fathers were intelligent enough to reject the British aristocratic system (by denying all foreign titles), yet our history has shown that the American public has, time and time again, attempted to recreate the system by voting into office people who have no particular claim to competence other than their family name: John and John Quincy Adams, Theodore and Franklin D Roosevelt, John F, Robert and Teddy Kennedy. Bill and (let us hope not) Hillary Clinton. George HW and George W (and maybe Jeb) Bush.
I propose nothing less than a constitutional amendment banning relatives of elected Presidents from running for office "unto the 7th generation" (or something similar).
Comments?
Stupid idea. If you don't like a particular candidate, don't vote for him/her.
Ah yes, anti-nepotism. Pretty perplexing considering history and genetics. The problem will be where you make the cutoff.
I was under the impression that everyone born in our country is supposed to have the same opportunities.
How about an amendment banning people to become president who post vanities?
Unfortunately, the large majority of American voters vote for a name they have heard of.
I'm quite willing to exchange Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton for Jeb Bush....
That's not my point. Why should Ted Kennedy be deprived of the opportunity to run for POTUS just because he had a brother that held the office. Ted is as much an American as his brother was. I'm personally glad he didn't become POTUS but I believe his right to try for the office should not and cannot be legislated away.
Now there's another possibility!
