CARBONDALE, Ill., May 20 (AP) — Seven people were threatened or injured by female deer last year on Southern Illinois University's campus, and the confrontations have prompted the university to wage a safety campaign looking ahead to this spring's fawning season.
The incidents have been attributed to the does' protective motherly instinct, their squeezed habitat and, in some cases, too much human curiosity.
The university is now urging students to keep their eyes peeled for deer, not to approach them, and to run if a wild-eyed deer starts bounding their way.
"Before last year, no one really had heard of this sort of thing," said Clay Nielsen, a wildlife ecologist at the university.
Mr. Nielsen said he believes different deer were responsible for the three attacks that sent four people to the hospital, mostly with minor injuries.

Actually, all the attacks occurred after the local drive-in showed BAMBI.
