NEW YORK (AP) - The Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines apologized for disrespecting President Bush during a London concert in 2003. But now, she's taking it back. "I don't feel that way anymore," she told Time magazine for its issue hitting newsstands Monday. "I don't feel he is owed any respect whatsoever."
As war in Iraq loomed, Maines told the London audience: "Just so you know, we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas."
The remarks led to death threats and a backlash from other country stars, including a high-profile spat with Toby Keith. It also stalled what until then had been the group's smashingly successful career.
Bandmate Emily Robinson said she knew right away the remark wouldn't be taken lightly and got "hot from my head to my toes."
"It wasn't that I didn't agree with her 100 percent; it was just, 'Oh, this is going to stir something up,'" she told Time.
For band member Martie Maguire, the controversy was a blessing in disguise.
"I'd rather have a small following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith," Maguire said. "We don't want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do."
The Chicks' hits include "Landslide,""Goodbye Earl" and "Wide Open Spaces." Their new album, "Taking the Long Way," is due out May 23. The first single is "Not Ready to Make Nice.
Reloading to shoot herself in the foot again.
Fatty looks like Porky Pig. I think the Dixie Twit's career is over. They've alienated their C&W fans, and they suck at R&R.
But didn't they have a song called "White Trash Wedding"?
Where do you begin with that kind of thinking?
So are we to infer that "the fans" that listen to other music, rather than the music of just the Dixie Chicks aren't worthy of attention?
Does that mean the Dixie Chicks won't do anyone else's music, except their own?
Musicians usually don't diss other fellow musicians, but this seems to me to be a real slap in the face to other musicians, and those who like music by other artists.
How childish are these people?
They have some growing up to do.
Yep... The Dixie Chicks are about as traditional country as you can get (unlike Faith Hill/ Shania Twain), which is why is so amusing that they think they can make it as pop. stars.
It's a really, really, really, small following. Hopefully, the small following is out of work and can't afford the concert tickets.
"...than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith..."
This is a good idea, insult all Keith and Reba fans...that includes nearly every CW fan.
It's beyond transparent that this LP will sell no where near what previous LP's have sold.. Even before the LP is released these pathetic POS are in full CYA mode. IMO = "Blaming poor sales on their political stance"
Bad chicks, worst handlers. Invest well chicks, you will need it.
I guess they hope that more will buy their CD thinking it will make them the "really cool people".
If they don't want to be country and don't want "those" type people as fans then Country radio, awards shows, and fans should honor their wishes and completely ignore them. Then the DC's will complain because they are being censored I guess.
You can stick a fork in the Chixie Dicks. They're done.
Really? Is that true??
"I'd rather have a small following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith," Maguire said. "We don't want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do."
ahaha.. you ditsy chicks wish you were in a 5 dic cd changer along with Reba and Toby... but you're not up to the level yet, and never will be.
Reba and Toby are in a place of their own
No that is not true.
Actually, Natalie's husband's father is Iranian, his mother German, and he was born here.
Oh... wait - nevermind. She's a highschool graduate who's been singing songs (and mediocre ones at that) for a living since 3 years after highschool....
(sigh)... now who will look to help me form my opinions??? Maybe Barb or Cher can help.
as the Gipper would say...Well, there you go again...
Good one. ;)
