It varies from country to country.
With the exception of the Dominican Republic, your pretty much right.
A few of my friends who are dominican do talk about MLB players donating jerseys, fixing up ball fields and donating money and doing various things for the community down there (granted, they made their money here, not there, so it would be nice for them to give a little here to, but thats just my own gripe).
One of my friends is a huge Sosa fan (whom I absolutly hate and loathe) because of stuff he did for their town with respect to ball fields and paying for clinics and stuff like that.
As for most of the other countries, no, the palyers don't do crap for them (Rivera is a slight exception in that he actually lives in Panama and helps out his local town where he stays).
FWIW, Barry Bonds, not only is a cheat (and pretty much a racist to boot), but while he make not be big on whites, make no mistake, he is downright hostile to his fellow african americans to boot.
Along with latinos.
He is just as ass in general.
He is smart enough to know that he can piss on the media, if they say anything, he plays the race card and they shut up......though a few of them have called him on it, just not enough of them have.
