His local power base is too strong.

That was also before the exculpatory evidence in the case became known. Now we have the ATM camera, the fast food receipts, the dorm ID card timestamps, the taxi driver, the mustache, the settlement lawyer, sex with boyfriend, etc., added to the mix. I'm just asking, would this be enough to taint Nifong if the people think he's ruining the lives of Duke students for his own personal gain?

People have to consider the economic impact to their county if Duke University loses enrollment over this. They already canceled their lacrosse season and the coach resigned. If parents send their children elsewhere, and donations to the school dwindle, all over this case, and it turns out to be a scam that Nifong elongated for his own career interests, then would the people still support him?

the voters dont care about that. what he did resonated with enough of the population to win. unless it blows up completely (the stripper says Nifong coerced her into going forward) they will still love him. also, he has enought other favors out after thirty years to lock up another group. I just don't see it. Freda Black was a great candidate, a great trial lawyer who had shown a willingness to take on tough cases and she hates Nifong and ran hard against him. His play was cynical but effective.

Look at Nifong's base. They were probably too poor or ignorant to enjoy any benefit from a good local economy anyway. As far as the dem voter in Durham are concerned, the more Durham becomes a cesspool, the better for them. At least their poverty wouldn't show that much among neighbors.

Actually, the only thing that came out before the election was the negative first DNA test. That should have been enough because it showed Nifong up. Since it was not, and he won, it's clear that his constituency wants this case prosecuted contrary to all evidence.

I have no idea, but this is my best educated guess. Nifong delivered something to someone (i.e. indictment of rich, elite, white boys for raping a po po 'ho)

Who has been "in your face" since then? The NPB. They managed to have a face to face with Nifong (unless it has been proven to be a rumor).

Now how did that happen? Did they walk up to the 6th floor and simply knock on the door? No, someone had to bridge the gap.

It would have to be someone Nifong knew, someone important to the black community. someone with ties to Durham and Duke, someone familar with both sides of the coin. It could also be someone with historical ties to that area of the state. Someone who has the "respect" it takes to deliver votes.

It could be someone with a long involvement in race relations in that area, as far back as MLK and even as recent as the Greensboro shootout.

Nifong kept the first part of his bargain with the first 2 indictments. He needs to keep it up until November.

Only speculating...............
