Actually not necessarily. The famous "prisoner's dilemma" show that people are under pressure to "confess" even when they did not do anything.
In the real world people often confess to minor things to give prosecutors a fig leaf for dropping charges they can not prove. I believe one of the indicted lacrosse players might have taken deferred adjudication for the Georgetown shoving match where he did nothing wrong. Rather than fight it, you say you did in exchange for having your record expunged. It will be interesting to see what happens if that case now comes to trial.
