I've watched the debate over immigration with some interest. When I heard President Bush was going to address the nation, I hoped he would be able to bridge some differences, or at least take some steps to do that.
Sadly, from what I've seen from some, not all, on FR and TV and talk radio is a lot more anger from people who continue to see the President as the enemy of America.
He's been honest and straightforward about his position on immigration: he's wanted a guest worker program for a long time. The administration has apparently sent back 6,000,000 illegals in the past five years and increased by 66% the funding for the border--or something like that, I forget the details.
He has been stellar in the War on Terror and tax cuts. We've not be re-attacked in five years and the economy is by any reasonable measure BOOMING.
I can't understand why so many see him as an enemy to the state.
The 11,000,000 illegals didn't all come in "under his watch". He wants them to earn citizenship, and he has pledged to double border agents and funding by the end of 2008.
This man is America's enemy?
I was sad to hear a conservative pundit gripe "this is too little too late" last night. So what is the choice? Vote Democrat?? Vote third party? You may as well vote Democrat, because that is what will happen.
Sorry, I refuse to see George Bush as the enemy. That title is reserved for Democrats in the world of politics.
I agree. I disagree with President Bush on several things but there is a type of Freeper who will call you a "Bushbot" if you agree with him on anything. They'll also say "Jorge Bush". They are about as idiotic as the DUmmies and I treat them as such.
The only thing u have ever demonstrated on other posts is that this is the "only" issue u seem to think matters in the cosmos...and are willing to be irrational about what is being done about it.
The POTUS isnt the enemy, one issue miscreants can be...
"get a Constitution Party candidate elected, and those on the left who see this as an opportunity for the Perot effect"
They have to give the 50% of eligible voters who do not vote something to actually become involved in. In addition..
30% approval for repubs and 30% approval for demos means there is 40% who can be switched over if given something besides a guaranteed status quo.
Perot actually had a substantial base but he let the media hijack his campaign when they started looking into his personal life andhis family. Had he stuck with the campaign things could have ended a lot different.
I really don't want to BE among people who hate what is good and love what is evil.
FR is on the verge of extinction, and it will be these hate-filled liars that put it over the edge.
This is NO place for a conservative to be. It's seething with an anger, hysteria and deceit that are in no way, shape or form conservative values.
You are hereby nominated to be President!
That is a horrible analogy.
Be my guest!
You nailed it. If you can't get what you call a "real Conservative" on the ballot and elected, then you ain't as strong as you think you are. I do believe the so-called "real conservatives" have much to offer to Conservativism in general. What they forget as they go out on threads to search and destroy RINOs and BUSH-bots is that if they are ever going to win any elections they need to convince people that they are not total hate-filled lunatics and are deserving of their vote. I just can't believe Ronald Reagan would ever have approved of some of the tactics I've seen on FreeRepublic.
Tokra, they can and do. They use forged ids. They also get free hospital care, special breaks in higher education normally reserved for in-state RESIDENTS (legal), and drive their unsafe jalopies like maniacs--without insurance.
Coulter has been surprisingly absent in this debate about illegals. Oh, she's written a couple of columns, but one gets the sense that it's not a hot-button issue with her.
Coulter may agree with Bush (in which case she would never openly agree with him), or it just may not be something she cares about.
Quote: "You mean "conservatism" like granting 4 million illegals amnesty in 1986?
Immediate, unconditional amnesty?"
No, I never said Reagan was perfect. But come now, are you telling me that W is a Reagan Conservative?
Until the President takes more effective measures than what he has proposed, including use of the Regulars, Marines, and Air Force in surveillance and construction, a massive expansion of the Border Patrol, and the construction of a physical barrier (not just cameras like at the local bank branch or convenience store), he and the party will not regain the enthusiastic support of conservatives. Furthermore, with the proposal to permit the existing illegals to enter a track to citizenship, the support of conservatives may become a moot point. If 12 (or possibly 20) million illegals receive the voting franchise, they will use that power to elect liberal Democrats. Thus, America will once again have a Democratic majority, the GOP will return to its mid-20th Century status as a permanent minority, and conservatism as a political ideology will be extinct.
The stakes are too high for the half-hearted measures the President has proposed.
I'm tired of the Residents being treated like the enema!
I can't stand this any more. FR is diseased, and I don't think it's going to recover.......
I'm sure the left is dancing with joy at what these thugs have done to this once great forum.
Millions of conservatives disagree, in the strongest possible terms, with President Bush's immigration plans.
Ross Perot -- he said that there would be a "giant sucking sound" from all of the jobs moving to Mexico. His arguments on NAFTA were so pathetic that Al Gore was able to wipe the floor with him on the televised debate.
It would be amusing that 20% of the voters selected Perot in 1992 -- a billionaire populist who made his fortune processing government paperwork -- but nothing about 1992 was the least bit amusing (except Gore's ridiculous book).
You two think Bush is acting like the "enemy"? Your rhetoric is totally on drugs.
