I've watched the debate over immigration with some interest. When I heard President Bush was going to address the nation, I hoped he would be able to bridge some differences, or at least take some steps to do that.
Sadly, from what I've seen from some, not all, on FR and TV and talk radio is a lot more anger from people who continue to see the President as the enemy of America.
He's been honest and straightforward about his position on immigration: he's wanted a guest worker program for a long time. The administration has apparently sent back 6,000,000 illegals in the past five years and increased by 66% the funding for the border--or something like that, I forget the details.
He has been stellar in the War on Terror and tax cuts. We've not be re-attacked in five years and the economy is by any reasonable measure BOOMING.
I can't understand why so many see him as an enemy to the state.
The 11,000,000 illegals didn't all come in "under his watch". He wants them to earn citizenship, and he has pledged to double border agents and funding by the end of 2008.
This man is America's enemy?
I was sad to hear a conservative pundit gripe "this is too little too late" last night. So what is the choice? Vote Democrat?? Vote third party? You may as well vote Democrat, because that is what will happen.
Sorry, I refuse to see George Bush as the enemy. That title is reserved for Democrats in the world of politics.
No. He is not the enemy. However, you have to think about why this action took so long. Primary elections were just held. Prior to those Primaries there were a number of raids on businesses that hired illegals. When did that happen previously (that the MSM reported on?)?
Now with the general election looming, don't you think the timing is a little suspect?
Bush has done a fair job in many areas. Unfortunately, he has come off as a bigger liberal than the liberals when it comes to budgets, spending, and, yes, illegal immigration.
I'm not going to bash Bush. It isn't him alone. We have a Senate to thank for a lot of this too.
With Ann there is always the thought that she's got her tongue in her cheek. With Malkin, you know she is filled with misdirected rage.
So Flo, whatcha want us to do?
Agreed.
You mean "conservatism" like granting 4 million illegals amnesty in 1986?
Immediate, unconditional amnesty?
Thank you. Like many, I'd like to see more done, and if I had my wish, it would have been done as of yesterday. Wishes aren't always reasonable, let alone possible. EVEN IF the President doesn't do as much about illegal immigration as I'd like, he's done much for this country and I am grateful.
I wish others would stop and think a minute before abandoning the President. We have a better USSC because of him. We're clearing out the rotten-to-the-core CIA. The economy is absolutely booming. Despite media claims to the contrary, we're doing well in Iraq, and continue to clean out the nest of terrorists there--terrorists who, in many cases, have either always been there or supported by Saddam all along.
There is more to the local, national, and global picture than just one, very narrow issue. Illegal immigration is, indeed, an important issue, but it's not the only one.
Another thing I wish these people would consider is, how would Kerry have handled immigration?
Far, far worse, in my estimation.
We need to count our blessings.
The government of Mexico has openly been encouraging unlawful acts by its own citizens, in and against these United States.
Bush said nothing of the responsibility of Mexico, to remind its citizenry of their unlawful acts. His address did not address the unlawful acts of the aliens, here in the United States. (Years have gone by, since 9/11, and month after month of Bush failing to do his duty to secure, as in secure, our borders. His address last evening, remained in the tenor of his last visit with el Presidente Fox, when Bush said that he "'intends' to enforce the law," leaving us to wonder what he means by intends?)
Bush's agenda was made clear last evening: Make not much more than a "demonstration of the troops," and effectively continue with the established federal price supports for the REITs'/developers' real estate buble by means of state-enforced wage controls --- there will be cheap labor by order of the President.
RINO's who protest all about "being competitive" but cannot bear to have their super-over-valued properties compete in the marketplace (propped up by the first purpose of the Federal Reserve's interest rate manipulations), won again.
The distance between the middle class and our ability to have and to hold our land, is being expanded by the President, who offered no protection for ordinary law-abiding Americans, from the mass trespassing done by illegal aliens.
Bush did not even mention illegal aliens, as he parsed and parsed and parsed his way through a replay of previous speeches, carefully side-stepping the hot buttons that continue to make a case for One Mexico.
Bush keeps ignoring the reconquista for One Mexico.
He keeps refusing to stand up for our sovereignty and for our property rights; and the RINO's seem to be willing to sell anything to make a buck, in the absence of their former ability to produce, given that their ability to produce has been forced overseas by government regulations and taxation.
The Republican Party, last evening, utterly failed to stand up against big government expansion and burdens, that have driven up the cost of capital and property, to the point where only cheap labor can maintain this inflationary spiral upward and upward.
This action by Bush, will only force the real estate bubble to burst at an even higher cost to our economy.
We must have deflation and let the prices of property begin to decline, in order to remain viable.
Else, the RINO's will sell out to foreign "investors," leaving ordinary law-abiding Americans without home and without country.
There is a real estate bubble. His plan to keep it supported with cheap imported labor, will only increase the federal welfare burden for law-abiding Americans, in addition to setting the stage for national healthcare.
Bush is handing the country, our property, to foreigners and aliens, and he is handing our rights to property and healthcare, to the decision-making ad hoc / politics of the moment mechanics of the Democrat Party and Hillary Clinton.
The President will sign a bill very close to what he proposed last night.
Contrary to what some of the hyperventilators say, the Republic will survive.
The "It's All Bush's Fault!!" refrain is just as tired coming from the Right as it is when used by the Left.
There would be no illegals here and no crime on the border if Americans (1) didn't buy dope from Mexico (2) didn't use cheap labor from Mexico and other Latin American countries.
Plenty of blame to go around if you ask me, and the problem has been decades in the making.
Unlike other do-nothing Presidents, GWB is actually trying to get something through Congress.
And on this issue, no President going back decades can be pointed to as better than GWB.
He does what he says better than most Presidents. Sometimes people like what he does, and sometimes not. But his actions do match his words.
Clinton was popular because he did nothing. Trying to accomplish anything in Washington upsets people. Boo Hoo.
I'm spamming the threads with it, the same way the hysterics have spammed their threads. They don't like it :-)
But turnabout is fair play. LOL
ROGER THAT!!!!
Great post.
And the problem did not emerge overnight, as some would have us believe.
What a dumb accusation. No worse than most others floating around here, however.
Can't handle the truth, huh?
Since you hysterics spammed the threads for months, it's fair game to spam a little truth.
I keep hearing this malarky about illegals getting welfare. Once again - THEY DON'T!
Only legally admitted aliens with a green card that have been in the country for more than 5 years are eligible for welfare.
Get it? Illegals can not and do not get welfare in the US!
Those people are now Hannity's favorite callers. They're everywhere being exploited by some people for ratings.
My guess is that they're everywhere lying thru their teeth and using this as an opportunity to help the dems.
The Presidents plan sounded great, just what is needed for a successful policy. The reality is that once the smoke clears it will be enforced with the same enthusiasm as the current laws.
Definitely need to count our blessings, Miz.
I disagree - unless he can peel off a few RINO GOP House members to join the Dems in hindering the vast majority of GOP House members who believe that no bill is better than a bad bill. And what does that say for the position that Bush is taking here that the only chance of a House/Senate compromise involves getting the Dems behind his proposal?
