WINCHESTER, Tenn. -- A 60-year-old woman was fatally attacked by dogs in a rural residential area where she regularly walked, investigators said. Diana S. Acklen, 60, of Decherd, was attacked by at least two dogs as she walked near her residence Saturday afternoon, a report by Franklin County Sheriff's Maj. Bruce Elliott shows. A preliminary report by the state medical examiner's office shows Acklen died from a "dog mauling," The Herald-Chronicle of Winchester reported Monday.
Elliott's report shows Acklen was apparently attacked by dogs near the residence of Ronnie Swann in Decherd, about 50 miles northwest of Chattanooga.
Elliott ordered Franklin County's animal control officer to remove two large dogs, a chocolate Labrador and a white mixed breed, from Swann's property.
An investigation, including DNA and rabies tests on the dogs, was continuing.
Swann told investigators that he owned the Labrador, but the white dog that may be a mix between a bulldog and a cur was a stray that he had been feeding.
Acklen's husband of 41 years, Dennis, said his wife had complained about the dogs before.
"One would kind of growl and show its teeth, and she was kind of afraid of it," he said.
Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agent Larry Davis told the twice-weekly newspaper that officials were also looking at a third dog. Sheriff Mike Foster requested the assistance of TBI agents.

A: Never!
Q: When will people realize that a concealed carry permit, and possession of a weapon on one's person, may have allowed this not-so-elderly woman to save her own life?
P.S. I would have had no qualms about killing those dogs rather than allowing them to kill me. I might have even warned their owner ahead of time what would happen to them if he did not keep them penned up.
What a sad story!
I'm not saying that I would necessarily kill a stray dog, but if it acted aggressive, no matter the breed, I would probably have half a thought to. Most of the time strays around here are friendly enough for me to corral them until animal control comes. But this lady was probably surrounded, which means a pack, and I stay away from those.
Or even if unsocialized, mistreated, or poorly bred.
