The mystery DNA was a total surprise to the DA. Still, the DNA belonging to the boyfriend was the best result he could hope for.

I don't see where anything in my post supports the mystery DNA was a total surprise to the DA. Also, I don't see how this would be the best result he could hope for! How do you support that?

Huh? Maybe I gave you too much credit then. It’s obvious the DA thought any DNA found in the stripper would be from the Duke boys. When the lab notified him there was semen DNA- but from someone other than the lacrosse players, Nifong was obviously surprised, otherwise he would have tested the boyfriend beforehand as opposed to the last minute. If there was DNA from someone other than the Duke boys, the best result for the prosecution would be the boyfriend. At least Nifong can say, “Hey, she had sex with her boyfriend. A woman can’t be raped after having sex with her boyfriend or husband?” Now, if the DNA was from some unidentified stranger, Nifong would be hard pressed to explain it away.
