Does anyone doubt that Nifong is holding some kind of charges over the head of Mangum's "boyfriend" to ensure that she goes forward with this case?

Not so sure - he knows Ms. Mangum won't last 2 minutes with this army of defense lawyers. And when she looks stupid he looks stupid. Although he's had a huge headstart.

I thnk what he needs most is for her to get a migraine and decide she can't go through with it and face these evil white boys again.

Here's one from the line-up where she says of the player likely to be indicted Monday solely on her say-so:

DNA found in the stripper would be from the Duke boys. When the lab notified him there was semen DNA- but from someone other than the lacrosse players, Nifong was obviously surprised, otherwise he would have tested the boyfriend beforehand as opposed to the last minute. If there was DNA from someone other than the Duke boys, the best result for the prosecution would be the boyfriend. At least Nifong can say, “Hey, she had sex with her boyfriend. A woman can’t be raped after having sex with her boyfriend or husband?” Now, if the DNA was from some unidentified stranger, Nifong would be hard pressed to explain it away.

Uh huh...so now the SANE report has been rendered at least neutral because bruising and swelling can be explained by sex with her "boyfriend", and not a rape. The SANE report was the only medical evidence the DA had.
It is NOT a good thing there is other DNA from the vaginal swab. I think most concur the DNA material from her "boyfriend" was not deposited via a rape, but from consensual sex. I am not sure why you think this is "the best result the DA could have hoped for." ????

You may be looking at this in error. I take it this woman doesn't care if she's arrested or not. She's in a business (or 2) where that's part of the risks and she's prepared for that, or she's just crazy enough to know that all that will happen in her case is a referral to a mental health outpatient clinic (and someone here has that information too I'd bet).

So, what would be a more powerful motivator to someone like that who already has a criminal record?

These two issues bother me greatly:

Attorneys said they didn't know why the SBI failed to detect DNA material on a vaginal swab taken from the alleged rape victim, unless the state agency did not test that particular swab.

"There were a number of things that were not analyzed by the SBI lab," Ekstrand said. "I'm trying to match up what's what. We still need a medical report so we'll know exactly how many swabs were taken and who analyzed them."

I'm fairly open-minded, and it is mind-numbingly WEIRD that the semen was not detected. That the boyfriend had not ALSO been immediately called in for testing/questioning.

Tossing this question into the open: What if the first "swab" indicated a male "sex partner" that one wished to not have known to the public? Can one keep DNA materials "live" (frozen?) and can said DNA materials be planted, in a lab?

If I knew the answer to these, I wouldn't be asking...
