I can't even begin to tell you how P*issed this Mrs. Duke Alumna and this Mr. Duke Alumnus are at Duke. We were outraged when they allowed the terrorist group to talk and recruit on campus but this whole thing is a new low. Brodhead is going to use this whole affair to "Yalify" Duke and get rid of men's sports too. I think his plans may fail because he is going to need men's sports after admission acceptances fall off. From what I can tell the alumni are outraged at Duke's behaviour. It doesn't surprise me that an alumnus is helping out the cab driver. One of the lacrosse players said that the alumni has been the single most supportive group. This is what happens when you import lilly-livered blue state yankees into the south (see our screen name). They think they know the culture and all they know is their ivy-leagued ideology of racial politics. Hopefully there will be a change of venue to where rational red staters hold some sway.

I bet Brodhead now realizes to his horror the liability implications of Dean of Student Affairs Wasoliek's failure to inform the parents of the players on Mar. 14 that their sons may have been involved in an alleged felony and were likely to be approached by police.

Sue W. attended while I was there and had her Dean job by the time I left. She wanted to pretend she was "hip" and "cool" but she pretty much a puritan.

We in Lancaster House (now Edens 2C) started the "The Lancaster Lip Sync". It was in the best tradition of "Let's have a show". Initially we had about two dozen "acts" with people in costume lip syncing to everything from "Jimi Hendrix" to "The Captain and Tennille" and included the "White Supremes". At first it was a very modest event on the Quad patio with someone's stereo.

By the time I left, it was a campus-wide event up on the Intramural Fields (now the soccer stadium). As usual, there were kegs of beer and a bunch of rowdy people. I remember Sue W. being there and complaining to me, the older grad student who she thought would be sympathetic, about the noise and behavior and expressing the opinion "I wish this event would go away." I guess she thought we should all be in the library. I think it eventually morphed into the Duke "Battle of the Bands" (Ben Folds once performed) and now, apparently, it's completely gone.

Given her predisposition I'm really really surprised that she didn't have the whole lax team on the carpet by the afternoon of 3/14.

I hope these Northern boys are aware of the support they are getting from the REAL South.
