This is NO SURPRISE to Veterans of the Courtroom. It was 'predictable':

Actually according to the article you posted, they are not denying it, they are just claiming the Duke Officer was listening to a conversation and did no follow up.

In other words, DPD is saying the Duke officer only heard half the story.

They are definitely trying to down play it, but they aren't denying it was said.

They are approaching a denial here (or hanging the guy out to dry, as Susan Filan stated the strategy the DA/Police will take):
