Red Sox v Yankees--The Holy War Continues
05/09/06 | misterrob

Posted on 05/09/2006 4:03:54 PM PDT by misterrob

The saga continues in the Bronx this week. The Sox send out Beckett, Wakefield and Schilling. The Yankees counter with Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina and Shawn Chacon.

The New York Post ran a back cover story questioning why anyone has not dared to throw at David Ortiz.. (maybe because he is 6' 4" and weighs 250 lbs) Sox offseason pickup Josh Beckett returns to Yankee Stadium for the first time since Game 6 of the 2003 World Series.

Series returns to NY after an abbreviated series last week in Boston where Boston fans expressed their true feelings about Johnny Damon.

Hmmm... this new pitcher David Riske just did a great job last inning...

And Pop Up Nixon ended the inning.

Trot has never quite figured out that trying to pull outside pitches results in pop ups and ground balls.

Question for you on last's night's game..when Papi got the single in the 8th..and Sax had 1st and 3rd...why didn't they remove him for a pinch runner? I mean, no way in hell he scores from first on a double...and Fenway offers lots of opportunities for a two bagger, and he's not gonna come up again..so..

Is Franconca blowing some of the basic stuff..?

Did we see the same game last night?

Boston Bottom 8th

- Trot Nixon fouled out to third to end the inning.
- Manny Ramirez singled to left center scoring Kevin Youkilis. Runners on first and third with two outs and Trot Nixon due up.
- David Ortiz popped out to short. Runners on first and second and with two outs and Manny Ramirez due up.
- Mariano Rivera enters the game for the Yankees with runners on first and second and one out.
- Mark Loretta walked. Runners on first and second with one out and David Ortiz due up.
- Kevin Youkilis walked. Runner on first with one out and Mark Loretta due up.
- Dustan Mohr struck out looking. None on with one out and Kevin Youkilis due up.

Ortiz didn't get a hit in the 8th. Youks got a 1-out walk and moved to 2B on a 1-out walk to Loretta. Ortiz hit a high pop fly off Mo to Jeter, which was caught for Out 2. Manny then hit a single off Mo to Damon, which scored Youks from 2B (only 1 run would have come from a single with no one on 3B). Loretta did move two bases, too, but that left him at 3B, with Nixon up. And Nixon got jammed and A-Rod caught his foul ball.

And, besides, our problem was offense last night (no Wily Mo Pena-- and it showed), and Ortiz would have come up again to bat in the 9th if our #9, #1, and #2 hitters reached base (which either would have added a run or tied the game), something that was very possible had Mohr not struck out because Youks and Loretta have been getting on base extremely well in the last few weeks (Loretta was basically a Mendoza line hitter for a long time but has gone on a tear and is now basically the .310 hitter we thought he would be).

So, if you meant the 1st and 3rd with Loretta and Manny, there were two outs in the game and we had a 2-run deficit and the two players on base are both very valuable hitters to us. And Loretta would have scored had Nixon singled-- no need for a PR.

Oh, and Tito had nothing to do with losing that game. That was A-Rod, a 40-homer AL MVP, hitting an important home run. It happens.

Tito didn't help either. He left Mirabeli in the game to hit against Farnsworth when Tek was available. Big strike out there. Mirabeli is not the hitter he was back in 2004. Tito also let Wake stay in after a 4 pitch walk then a second 4 pitch walk then leaves him in to face A-Rod.

Just got in a little while ago. Saw the bases loaded with Stinnett (sp?) up, I figured Clement would easily get him. Instead it's now 4-2 Yankees? Geesh... how badly was Clement hit? I didn't see it...

Matt went to that "special place" that he goes to so very often in the middle of an inning. It starts with a 4 pitch walk and goes downhill from there. 2 walks, a ball hit off of him, a hit batsman and then 2 hits and there you go.

MATT CLEMENT SUCKS!!!!!

MATT CLEMENT SUCKS!!!!!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the same (my husband agrees, too). I've had enough of this head case... hope the Sox get rid of him ASAP.

Clement... Tavarez... Seanez... I'm so disgusted. Can't the Red Sox front office do better?

This was all Matt's doing. Tavarez gets paid to put the ball on the ground but the drawn in infield gave Gonzo no chance.

Matt Clement had the balls to bitch about being held out of the Yankees series in New York????

HE SUCKS

That's what I've been saying (actually.. shouting!). My husband (who is far more knowledgeable about baseball than I am, I must admit) says that Papi has a lot of trouble hitting against pitchers like Farnsworth, who pitch at 97mph. And I guess he's not so great against lefty pitchers, like Ron Villone...

Ah, that's right! Instead of pitching in the NYY series, he was stuck on the mound in the driving rain, pitching in that rain-shortened game at Fenway against the Texas Rangers on Friday, May 12. I remember he had this look on his face as if to say: "Get me outta here!" Wuss...
