you'll just make a turtle, or a boat anchor.

Darn near was yesterday. I have a lake in the back--and it was close to being tossed out there a couple times yesterday.

I'll work at it today and see how things go.

You have been so helpful--Thanks!!!!

"Darn near was yesterday."

Yes, then any more modern OS will kill it. You can upgrade to IE 5 only on 98SE, but keep the media features low. The machine won't handle them. I doubt any action games will run. Even if you had old games. The windows solitare and stuff might be fine though. I hope there's a 56K modem in there.

One last note. you may have picked a v92 number and the ltop won't negotiate. open control panel and see if there are any V92 icons. If not, the modem is something else and a different phn number will have to be picked. if there is a V92 icon click it enter the netzero number if asked and hit test, adjust, or whatever it says. The modem software will train the modem to the connection quality.

I haven't heard back from netzero yet.

It occured to me that their software might be required to activate the account for the first time w/o their input. You have a cable modem, so it would be quick to use the fast computer to download it. Install it there. Activate the account. Make sure it works.

Then use windrs dialup on the laptop. That should work. Then uninstal netzero from your machine and delete the files, netzero dialup, and any icons. Make sure to use the "install/uninstall software" icon in control panel to do that.

re IE upgrade

pickup a free ISP connection CD at K-Mart, Wal-Mart, computer store, etc. checkout lane (or AOL sample)
all have IE 6.0 on 'em

Next, if you're going w/ dialup get on the net and
1. dnload NetZero's initialization file (about 600KB +/-)& burn to floppy or CD
2.return to NetZero & establish (3+) user IDs & PWs
3. for each NZ ID, burn the NZ software to a different location on the HDD e.g. C:/, .../program files, C:/temp, C:/windows/temp, etc. & w/ a desktop shortcut for each

NetZero will give you 10 free hours/mo. for ea. acct.
