It is just '98.
I may get a copy of 2000 or 98se from my son this weekend and reinstall windows.
OK, netzero requires no other software, just windows login. The netzero software just junks up the computer. It's possible that the netzero acct isn't setup at their end yet give it a few hours. You could use your other computer to test that.
If you connect with that, then there's something that needs to be done either in modem properties, or the laptop modem is bad.
Yes, install SE. I don't know the processor, but I assume 98SE would be the best. If you load the latest software and browser, you'll just make a turtle, or a boat anchor.
Darn near was yesterday. I have a lake in the back--and it was close to being tossed out there a couple times yesterday.
I'll work at it today and see how things go.
You have been so helpful--Thanks!!!!
Yes, then any more modern OS will kill it. You can upgrade to IE 5 only on 98SE, but keep the media features low. The machine won't handle them. I doubt any action games will run. Even if you had old games. The windows solitare and stuff might be fine though. I hope there's a 56K modem in there.
One last note. you may have picked a v92 number and the ltop won't negotiate. open control panel and see if there are any V92 icons. If not, the modem is something else and a different phn number will have to be picked. if there is a V92 icon click it enter the netzero number if asked and hit test, adjust, or whatever it says. The modem software will train the modem to the connection quality.
Most hospitals have digital phone systems, and dial-up modems won't work on those. The only analogue lines that they would have are typically used for faxing, and that is increasingly rare because electronic faxing is the way it's done now. I would hope that the people at the hospital could get them a wireless connection just for the Internet. We have done that on several occasions.
I haven't heard back from netzero yet.
It occured to me that their software might be required to activate the account for the first time w/o their input. You have a cable modem, so it would be quick to use the fast computer to download it. Install it there. Activate the account. Make sure it works.
Then use windrs dialup on the laptop. That should work. Then uninstal netzero from your machine and delete the files, netzero dialup, and any icons. Make sure to use the "install/uninstall software" icon in control panel to do that.
The hospitals I've seen in the midwest have anolog. ar will need to check by calling the hospital. I doubt this computer is worth buying the stuff for an ethernet connection and it appears there's no provision for it. A new laptop would be more cost effective. Maybe the hospital has a spare?
That's what I was thinking. We probably have enough spare stuff to get every patient in our hospital online if we had to lol.
pickup a free ISP connection CD at K-Mart, Wal-Mart, computer store, etc. checkout lane (or AOL sample)
all have IE 6.0 on 'em
Next, if you're going w/ dialup get on the net and
1. dnload NetZero's initialization file (about 600KB +/-)& burn to floppy or CD
2.return to NetZero & establish (3+) user IDs & PWs
3. for each NZ ID, burn the NZ software to a different location on the HDD e.g. C:/, .../program files, C:/temp, C:/windows/temp, etc. & w/ a desktop shortcut for each
NetZero will give you 10 free hours/mo. for ea. acct.
Yes, I've seen them lining the halls in other hospitals. I imagine there's a stockroom too.
KoRn indicates the hospital IT dept would have a spare and they might be happy to lend it. You could call the nurses station and they could answer your question above and you could ask them to see what they could do about getting a spare. Since the floor nurses station is well aware of the situation, I think they would be happy to talk to the right people. Your nephew's doc could also intervene.
if you recieved a CD from netzero it should than connect to the internet and ask you for the info it will need in order to give you an account.
That would solve everything quickly. When a doctor wants something done, it gets done. Asking about whether the phones are analogue or not could be an issue. I doubt 90% of the people working there could tell you what kind of phones they use. Most people just simply aren't aware of such things. If this were my hospital I would give them a USB wireless network adapter to use and get online. I have an entirely separate physical network just for public wireless Internet access, they may have the same there. It all depends on the hospital really.
Yes, I know. That's why I mentioned that. I figure the nurse's station on the floor he's on would be quality and able to handle the IT request though and the parents would make the request. They'd get the docs OK/request. Yes, the parents should ask the doc. I can't see why he refuse.
Again--THANKS for all the help. You all came running for a sick little kid and our family appreciates the help and the prayers offered. You are the best of FR---thanks:)
