In a stunning turn of events, radio company Greater Media this morning pulled out of the long-running bidding war with Entercom Communications for broadcasting rights for Boston Red Sox games.
Sources say Entercom has won the hotly contested battle for Red Sox play-by-play. Entercom, parent company of local stations WEEI-AM (850) and WRKO-AM (680), is the only remaining bidder. WEEI, the top sports talker in the country, has been the longtime partner with the Sox.
Entercom’s bid was said to have offered the Sox an option to buy an equity stake in WRKO in the future. Sources say that under the next radio deal the Sox play-by-play would likely be on WRKO.
“This was a difficult decision, but at the end of the day, the deal didn’t make economic sense for the company,” Greater Media President and Chief Executive Officer Peter Smyth said in a statement.
Greater Media seemed to have taken the lead earlier by offering an equity stake in a station and providing a stronger FM signal. But following a meeting between Entercom and Red Sox executives yesterday, the tide changed.
Entercom and Red Sox executives could not immediately be reached for comment.

After months and months of negotiations with the Red Sox and what seemed to be a done deal three weeks ago, in a dramatic move Greater Media has withdrawn its bid to acquire ball club's radio rights thru an equity swap deal involving one of its five Boston FM signals and giving the team partial ownership of the FM station WBOS 92.9FM. It was widely acknowledged by those close to negotiations that the Braintree-based radio company had the lock on the deal.
Greater Media's market manager Phil Redo stated in a press release earlier this morning which announcing company's decision to pull the plug on an attempt to land one of the best sports brands in the country :
"There are times when the best deal is no deal. This morning, Greater Media has decided to end our negotiations with the Red Sox. After many months of discussion, in the final analysis it was simply not in the best interest of the company and the effort and mission we have as a cluster."
According to various media reports (The Herald, The Globe), Entercom will now retain the Sox rights, however, the games will move from the 12-year flagship WEEI-AM 850 to clustermate talker WRKO-AM 680. WEEI has been the Red Sox flagship station since 1995 season and is the top-rated stations in Boston in drive-time slots among males 18-54.
As reported in BRW recently(BRW 4/7), WEEI was the number one billing station in Boston in 2005 generating an estimated $45 million in revenues for its parent company Entercom.
Incidentally, like the Celtics last year, Sox are returning to a familiar frequency - WRKO was the Sox affiliate from 1986 thru 1988 and the team's flagship from 1989 thru 1994 seasons. The games shifted to WEEI beginning with the 1995 season when the two stations' then-parent company American Radio Systems shifted sports format from weaker AM 590 frequency to a stronger AM 850.
WRKO returned as the Celtics flagship this past season via a revenue sharing deal with the ball club. Unless something changes, the Sox deal means that the talk-sports station will now have play-by-play for four local sports teams - C's, Sox, Boston College football Eagles and New England Revolution.
This year's hotly-contested bidding war for the Sox radio rights wasn't anything like the team's previous low-key contract renewal in 2000. Although Greater Media was also very interested in having its then-new FM talker WTKK 96.9FM anchor the Sox games six years ago, but it was unable to work out a deal.

The Red Sox are likely to move their games to radio station WRKO-AM after the 2006 season, after one of two main bidders for the broadcast rights said yesterday it would walk away from the negotiating table.
The owner of radio station WBOS-FM, Greater Media Inc., said it no longer will pursue a deal with the Red Sox. Greater Media had been the favorite to win the deal this week, but during several hours of meetings at Fenway Park in the owners' luxury suite Thursday, the two sides could not agree on final terms. Greater Media chief executive Peter Smyth and his lawyers ultimately left without signing. The breakdown in talks left the Red Sox's radio rights to Entercom Communications Corp., owner of WEEI-AM, Boston's dominant sports station, as well as WRKO.
In an interview, Smyth called his decision an ''economic issue."
''Would I have loved to have done it? Yes," he said. ''But I have a fiduciary obligation to the stockholders of Greater Media."
After negotiations with Greater Media fell apart, the Sox executives flew to Philadelphia and rekindled negotiations with Entercom. The Sox and Entercom were still negotiating late last night. Entercom all along has offered the team two stations: WEEI, which currently broadcasts Sox games, and WRKO. The Sox appeared to be headed to WRKO if the deal goes through. The current WEEI deal expires after this season, and the team has been taking bids from radio stations for a new deal.
The Red Sox and Entercom released a joint statement late last night. ''The Red Sox and Entercom engaged in productive discussions today regarding a radio contract. They are now in the process of clarifying issues."
The games would give a boost to WRKO, which has trailed WEEI in the ratings. WRKO already is the home of the Boston Celtics, and Jason Wolfe, the long-time program director at WEEI, recently expanded his responsibilities to include WRKO. In moving to WRKO, the Sox would benefit from a strong signal, and the team could separate itself from the sometimes acerbic commentary on WEEI.
The Sox's relationship with WEEI has been rocky at times: After general manager Theo Epstein's public split from the club in the offseason, the station's hosts and hordes of angry callers blamed Sox chief executive Larry Lucchino for Epstein's decision. Glenn Ordway, WEEI's afternoon host, was among the most vocal critics. When Lucchino ran into Ordway at a party at the Boston Harbor Hotel in December, the two exchanged words.
The prolonged talks over the radio deal have reinforced the Sox's reputation as tough negotiators. For months, the Sox shuttled between the two bidders, Entercom and Greater Media, who put in ever-increasing offers. The process dragged on, with both sides at times seeming optimistic that they would win. Greater Media wanted to let the Sox take an ownership stake in WBOS -- up to 25 percent -- and the two sides discussed putting sports programming on the air. Greater Media also offered the Sox the possibility of games on an FM station, which has better sound quality.
But Entercom came back with a strong campaign of its own. Chief executive David Field got involved. Entercom executives did not return phone calls yesterday.
When Greater Media walked away, it left a rich deal on the table: $140 million over 10 years, plus an $8 million signing bonus and the ownership stake, according to one account.
At that price, the deal would be the richest radio pact in Major League Baseball, surpassing the $13 million paid annually to the Atlanta Braves, and more than the New York Yankees' current $10 million deal, though that is expiring this year.
Around the country, radio stations are balking at pricey deals for sports play-by-play. The Chicago White Sox, despite winning the World Series last year, recently moved to a radio station that will pay the team $1 million less per year than its former deal, according to the Chicago Tribune.
In an internal memo, Phil Redo, a Greater Media executive, wrote, ''There are times when the best deal is no deal. This morning, Greater Media has decided to end our negotiations with the Red Sox. Greater Media's decision to walk away from the Red Sox deal raises questions over the future format of WBOS. In yesterday's internal memo, Redo praised the station and said it will set a billing record for the month of May. Still, WBOS has the lowest ratings of Greater Media's Boston stations, according to Arbitron Inc. In an interview, Smyth also expressed strong support for the station, and said he is happy with it. ''I don't see anything today I'm going to do," he said.
Separately, even without the Red Sox, Smyth left the door open to converting one of Greater Media's stations to a sports format. ''I'm never going to say never to anything," he said. ''I believe the marketplace will tell me what the available opportunities are."
I'm sure it will continue...in fact if you can pick up WAAF 107.3 out of Worcester--sister station of WRKO--you MIGHT be able to hear them there, too next year. WRKO's signal has problems to the west (has to "protect" other signals) and it's been suggested WAAF may be used, at least for night games.
WTIC has a great signal--was able to pick them up in Ohio while visiting a friend (kept up with my Sox that way). I think their antenna is on or near Talcott Mountain (saw the tower while visiting the Heublein Tower--nice views) in

Just curious how the weather is up there in Boston right now, and how it looks for early evening. The Boston hourly forecast and radar look pretty bad on accuweather.com and intellicast.com, but I would imagine the front would move out of the Boston area sometime soon. Here in north-central CT, it's cool and overcast, but there's no rain.
We have tix for tonight's and tomorrow's Red Sox games, but are thinking of staying home for tonight's game - if it's even played. We'll lose $46 (2 bleacher seats) if the game is played, but we'll save $$ on gas, tolls, hotel, etc. We live about 100 miles from Boston...

We finally heard around 3:45 or so that today's game had been postponed on WTIC radio (Hartford) and on WEEI, which I was streaming for awhile this afternoon. I didn't get a chance to get back on FR right after that (hubby took over computer).
The makeup game will be held sometime on the weekend of June 9-11 - when the Texas Rangers return to Boston - as a double-header. Works out pretty well for us... we have tix for June 10 and 11 also!
Now... I wonder if tomorrow's game will be on for 2:05pm. Doesn't look very good so far on the weather sites...

LOL! Yeah, we're getting roughly the same weather down here in the Hartford, CT area, but from what I've observed on the weather radar, the Boston area is really getting hit hard. No Red Sox game again today, obviously. I'm starting to wonder if we'll ever see baseball at Fenway again this spring...
I live not far from that area. It's actually the Avon/Simsbury/Farmington area, not Salisbury... :o)
My husband is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. Actually from the "East Bay" area where it's a lot warmer and sunnier than SF... gorgeous weather most of the time. He literally laughs out loud when he hears New England weather forecasters say: "Be sure to get outside tomorrow... it's going to be one of the ten best days of the year!" LOL

Avon--was spending a couple days in CT. From there, I headed
north to the Mass. Pike and home. Next day on TV I see something I thought was familiar--a furniture store on Rt 10
(nr jct 202). Turned out that _that morning_ (morning after I got back) there was a huge car pile up; couple of fatalities

Yes, that awful accident happened last July 29 in Avon, CT. Sadly the husband of someone my husband knew was killed in that accident... he left behind his wife and five little girls. Someone I worked with years ago was injured in the accident, but made it out alive without any life-threatening injuries. Here are two threads about the accident:

If I remember right, I was staying the night before in Southington and I stopped in Hartford and picked up some tourist info
including directions to the Rock Cats game in New Britain.
I had been there before but was uncertain. As it turned out,
there were torrential downpours so the game was called off
(and I made a stupid attempt to try and make it to N.B.
and got caught up in all that rain).
I think the next day I saw the Conn. Historical Museum
and also went to the Roaring Brook nature center in Avon,
just before the Dakota.

and also the locations in Vermont (Shelburne, Rutland,
Manchester), only they're known as Sirloin Saloon there.
