I would say that Honor Blackman worked out just fine as Steed's companion prior to the introduction of Diana Rigg's Mrs. Peel.
Ms. Blackman left the TV series for the "broader horizons" of film, for a little film called Goldfinger I believe, where she played a character with a very naughty name. "You're joking" was Bond's reply upon being introduced.
By the way, Diana Rigg just turned 69 on July 20.
Arrrggggggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!
“The Prisoner was not an ABC, NBC, CBS - network TV broadcast show”
I hate to date myself...but my recollection is that The Prisoner was
originally broadcast on CBS as a “summer replacement”, at least in
my hometown in Oklahoma.
Sadly, about the only Internet evidence I can find is about CBS declining
to broadcast one episode (due to drug-use issues). (URL and excerpt below)
And I will say that the first time I saw The Prisoner, years after the
original run, was on a PBS station.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prisoner
“The network, CBS, stated that their refusal was due to the episode’s
depiction of drug abuse, which many fans claimed was also seen in
other episodes.”
The Prisoner aired on CBS as a summer replacement series in either the summer of 1968 or 1969, at least the NY City station. That was a network owned station, in fact their flagship, so it would probably have been available to all CBS affiliates. I remember watching all 17 episodes that summer with my older sister. That's also how I can date it, as '69 would have been the last summer she spent at the family home before going off on her own.
Unlike the movie Wild Wild West which was a PC social revisionist project
Robert Conrad, the original James West from the TV Series, objected to Will Smith taking the part. It wasn't because he was black, but because they had always done their own stunts on the TV show. He considered it what set the show apart. He had the broken bones to prove it. He knew that there was no way Smith would be doing the same kinds of stunts and fights as he had done. He said that there was only one working actor he could picture as James West in the movie: Jackie Chan. He figured that Smith could play the Artemus Gordon part. I think that would have been a much better movie.
I've heard a story from a friend connected with film making that Jackie Chan heard of Conrad's remarks and liked the idea. Since he couldn't do Wild Wild West he decided he'd do his own western / buddy picture, which is where the idea supposedly came from for Shanghai Noon. Interesting idea, true or not.
Interesting. I think I looked at the Wikipedia site already but didn’t follow all the links. Thanks.
LOL, you posted a woman in clothes!! heh
.
Yes - Honor Blackman
Diana Rigg was the first one I saw on “The Avengers”
I believe she drove a Lotus Elan - which I had seen in the Lotus showroom in Manhattan about that time
—
CBS broadcast “The Prisoner” Hmmm - I stand corrected - I do make some errors
—
I’d say CBS might improve their marketshare and viewers and credibility by broadcasting “The Prisoner” reruns
—
Jackie Chan would have been an excellent choice to play Jim West in “The Wild Wild West”
I did see him in “Shanghai Noon” and he was good in that flick
[I do make some errors]
snicker, I have to write this down for future reference!!
.
LOL!
Diana Rigg was liked by women and men in “The Avengers” as “Mrs. Peel”
A mystery partnership -
There is another theme called “Mrs. Peel’s Theme”
I have a rare large .jpg of a no-text “Casino Royale” movie (007 parody) promo poster of a woman in a flowered “bodysuit” at 1000x750
Perhaps not right for this thread
A few years back they ran the Prisoner on some station. I thought it was pretty stupid.
I don’t think it was necessarily an “error” to state that Prisoner hadn’t aired on a network. I’m betting it was “made available” but wasn’t a network show, per se. I think it may have been an experiment and likely only a few of the more avant garde stations would have taken advantage of it at the time. You mention Manhattan. Were you living in the NYC area around then?
Rigg’s car was indeed a Lotus Elan, at least according to Wikipedia. It sure looks as I remember it.
The Prisoner’s car was also a Lotus, one of their kit cars, the Super Seven or Series Seven, I believe. There are reproduction and restoration kits available and you can build your own.
I too first learned of the Avengers when Diana Rigg was Mrs. Peel. ABC showed that version of the series, again at least in the NY Market. I even nearly got to meet the two leads when they visited the states during promos. My neighbor and school mate’s father was President of ABC Television at the time. He invited me to the event in NYC but I couldn’t get away. I discoverd Honor Blackman years later. I liked her more sophisticated character a good bit, but she wasn’t nearly as sexy as Rigg. I still think On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is one of the best Bond films, primarily for her involvement.
I’ve seen it and don’t want to see it again, but Playboy might like it!
.
I know - I worded that badly
That is one of the best things about FR
There are so many FReepers with so much info that it is likely that things can be corrected or edited quicker than on Wikapedia and by good sources (unlike Wikapedia which is subject to mischief and political tricks and revisionism)
“The Prisoner” is one of those rare shows you can watch over and over and see new things each time
.
I’ve never posted that one on a FR thread
You may mean the older Goldfinger graphic
I saw it, like the naked tattooed lady with her backside to you??
.
I thought that is a flowered bodysuit of the 60s flowerchild days
They also use it on the Burt Bacharach /Casino Royale record covers
Ahh, well you did mention bodysuit earlier, sorry. Afraid I just glanced at it and that was it. I’ll have to look again as it is skin color if I recall.
Clever.
That's right.
No. I mean Who was the Sixth Doctor?
No one else can remember him either!
Tom Baker is still my favorite but Christopher Eccleston is probably my second favorite. Then Tennant, Davison, Pertwee and Troughton. That is not really fair to Troughton because I've only seen him a few times and I suspect he could have been the best depending on the kitsch factor.
OK...I am confused. Are they doing this remake or not? I am not sure I would want to see it, let alone have it remade. Although I would insist Patrick McGoohan play Leo McKern’s part...Can you imagine him in the “Degree Absolute” interrogation scene?
