Twas to distinguish themselves from the lowly serfs who were not "free" to travel.

So are illegals immigration masons considered freemasons or unfreemasons because they had to break the law to travel. They traveled, but I am not sure they were really free to travel.

No, under medieval (sp!?) law, they'd be escaped serfs, subject to imprisonment or some other punishment.

Typically, their children would lose whatever title or right they had to their land/home and they themselves would become defacto slaves.

There were variations depending on the time period and the barony/country of origin.

Ah, the good old days.
