Firefox lost ALL of my bookmarks at one point.
I am open to any suggestions about other browsers, because I'm not too pleased with this one.

Profile bug. The bookmarks are still there in your profile directory as bookmarks.html.
Losing Places for 2.0 isn't a big deal--if it ain't ready, it ain't ready, and 3.0 will be the version with major changes (Cairo backend, Places, etc)

Do a file search for bookmarks.htm. I'm sure they're still there; it sounds like a profile problem. What were you doing before you lost them? What system are you running?
Regarding the article; I like the fact that they're going to take the time to do it right rather than ship a buggy product like another vendor we all know to well. I suspect they'll have it ready in time for their next scheduled update.
