PALM COAST, Fla. -- A man's best friend is supposed to be his dog, but one local dog was really let down by his human friends.
Rufus, a Rottweiler mix, was brought to the Flagler Humane Society by a man who said the dog just showed up in his yard with wounds and infection that could have killed him.
All Rufus needs now is a loving home, WESH 2 News reported.
Someone either deliberately torched the dog or threw caustic chemicals on Rufus. His backside is scarred, and his eyes were damaged by the burns.
The caring team at Flagler Humane Society, who live to love animals, were stunned by such cruelty.
"I was mad. I don't know how somebody can do that to a defenseless animal like that," said Lisa Hale, of the Flagler County Humane Society.
"When he first came in, he was very shy, very afraid of all humans, wouldn't let anybody near him, anybody touch him," said Sheryl Lodespoto, of the Humane Society.
Now, Rufus can't get touched enough. He's playful, he chases after his own shadow and he'll drool over you. In the last few weeks, Rufus has responded not only to medical treatment but to the kindness of strangers who think he's top dog.
"He loves everybody here. He's very loving, very playful, loves to cuddle, a completely different dog," Lodespoto said.
Workers at the Humane Society have a pound of puppies to help and protect. They clip, cure and care with one goal in mind.
"We're trying our best to take care of these animals. We want them to have good homes, and we're hoping people will come in and want to adopt," Hale said.
And more than anything, they hope someone will take Rufus.
"We are hoping that we can get a lot better and get him a very loving home with someone who spoils him and shows the love he deserves because he's a great, great dog," Lodespoto said.
If you're interested in adopting Rufus or any other animals at the Flagler County Humane Society, visit www.flaglerhumane.org or call (386) 445-1814.
I pray he gets the very best of life from here on out.
People don't deserve his trust.
Whatever sick bastard did this is surely raping a kid right now or planning a killing of a human.
Doggie PING -- poor abused dog survived, but needs good home.
I may get banned for saying this, but-whoever did this to the dog deserves a slow and painful death.
Dogs are pretty good at forgiveness. Don't trust anybody who doesn't love dogs.
this type of crap makes me want to puke. what's wrong with people? (looking at my angelic beagle curled up in a little ball on the couch right now, the little snuggler.) i just don't get it.
I hate TV "journalism." Most local TV reporters are so unbelievably juvenile.
I'd say being blowtorched or sprayed with caustic chemicals is a little more than "let down," and it certainly wasn't perpetrated by "friends."
Sheesh.
Is it possible someone was only defending themselves? It is an attack dog...
They were neither human nor his friends.
hear hear.
I always look at how my dogs or little children react to folks.
Dogs and little kids......and fit women in thongs....RINOs in retreat...
"these are a few of my favorite things"
Let's see... evidence of torture with caustic material and other burns to an otherwise friendly dog.
Nope. This is a case of one sick MF who deserves to be caught and imprisoned.
(This is probably the least caustic comment you will receive.)
Where's a pi$$ed of Pit Bull when needed?
Florida dog needs home Ping
There's a special place in hell for people who do things like this!

Hair - please remove me from the ping list. I cannot take these sadistic stories.
Sorry, and thanks.
That's a good list, wardaddy. Sounds like you have the makings of a sequel to the original!
